Windows 10 will not install !!!!!

Neighbour presented me with his Lenovo Laptop (currently on Windows 8.1) and asked if I would update this to Win 10.
Yes I replied, I have done this dozens of times before for others. Embarrassment to follow !!!!!

I have used both a usb media creation tool and also a iso disk. Several attempts have failed, with no error details displayed. It gets to approx 70% plus, and just flags up installation failed.
I did a quick google, and as a result I removed the Mcafee AV - took out all usb devices etc and tried again with no success.

Excuse these questions from a novice, but should I
1 - replace existing hard drive with a freshly formatted (NTFS) one and try again?
2 - Will the install process automatically decide if the drive will be mbr or gpt.
    Any help appreciated
    Thanks

    Completely Uninstall McAfee software

Download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

Using McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
    · Double click the MCPR.exe
    · A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically.
    · Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
    · After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
    · Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window: The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
    · Press Y on the keyboard.
    · Wait for the computer to restart.
    · All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.

SetupDiag is a free diagnostic tool by Microsoft that is designed to find and parse Windows 10 setup log files to determine why an upgrade or update failed to install on a computer system.

SetupDiag works only on devices running Windows 10. The second requirement is that it depends on the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 which needs to be installed on the device it is run on.

If you run SetupDiag without parameters, it attempts to locate log files that Windows 10 creates during the upgrade process in the default folders on the device.

The program creates a results.log file in its directory when it completes the scan which includes upgrade issues that it detected in the log files during parsing.

SetupDiag creates a zip archive of all log files that it processed on top of that which it saves as Logs.zip in the same directory as well.

    Which Lenovo laptop is it?
1 - replace existing hard drive with a freshly formatted (NTFS) one and try again?
    - you could do, but will then need to reinstall progs, transfer data... and it's not your laptop so this could cause a variety of difficulties.
2 - Will the install process automatically decide if the drive will be mbr or gpt.
    - that's based on the PC's BIOS/UEFI, whether that supports UEFI, and if both, then which is selected in its settings when Windows is installed.

Thanks everyone, tried McAfee total removal but this made no change.
I did then use a blank disk, this time there was a change in the install journey. It did fail BUT, the following message appeared.

" A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB or hard disk driver.
If our have a CD, DVD or flash drive ith the driver on it, please insert it now.
NOTE if the installation media for Windows is in the DVD drive or on a USB drive, you can safely remove it for this step"

Any ideas chaps, any guesses asto what driver is referred to.
Thanks for your time and patience

Which Lenovo laptop is it? - and about how old?
Post the URL of its driver download page.

Precisely how have you created your installation disk and is it a flash drive or a DVD or..?

    and also a iso disk.
No idea what that is... what do you mean by that?

    Thanks.

Let me try to provide further information
Lenovo G510 laptop approx 6 years old
I have a usb pen drive with media creation toll content
I have a DVD with the same content.
Prior to trying to update, I ran sfc + dism. Belarc assured me the hard drive was healthy + a check was made in the memory - Full AV scan carried out - all confirmed OK.

The existing windows 8.1 system is suspect and very slow.
I had not noticed the 'update option' when I went to get the creation tool - I will look at that tomorrow.
Being a novice, my head is in a spin at the moment. Will give an update later tomorrow (thanks for your help and patience)

Download the latest ISO file using the Media Creation tool.

Open the ISO file with Windows Explorer.

    Click on Setup.exe

    The upgrade will start.

    Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
