Installing new ssd drive in a friend's HP laptop..she doesn't have key

She doesn't have the box and what documentation she kept, there's doesn't appear to be a key listed/included. Furthermore, there is no sticker on the laptop. What is going to happen when I reinstall Windows on this new SSD? Will it ask for the key or recognize the laptop somehow?

If you reveal the precise make and model, then it might be possible to ascertain what the original os was and how it is licensed.

"hp laptop" is less than useless

It would help to know what "key" you're talking about? Also laptop make and model?

And SIW2's comment about "hp laptop" is less than useless" is less then helpful. And doesn't serve any purpose other then to disparage a laptop vendor.

    haha, sorry. It's hp 17-ca0009ds

And I'm referring to the Windows Product Key. Just have a feeling it will prompt me for it.

And unfortunately, the other hard drive is completely dead so I can't retrieve it from that drive. It's just that I have to make a special trip/drive to her home (not that close) so I want to get this answer before potentially wasting time.

    Hi,
Look inside the battery compartment for the key sticker.

We already opened it and there's no product key on any component within.

    Hi,
Buy one on ebay they have some that are 100% guaranteed to activate for pennies on the dollar I've used them before
Use paypal and if it fails get a refund and nothing lost.

    Hi AshleyQuick

This device appears to have come equipped with Windows 10 Home. If you Clean install Windows 10 while offline, when asked for a code just click [Later]. You can download the ISO for Windows 10 free of charge.

There are a few different methods to accomplish this task. Just ask if you require assistance.

Once you're finished with the setup, if this PC ever had a licensed copy, the Update servers will have the digital license online, problem solved.

Try reading through this to see if it helps... How to Find Your Original Windows 10 Product Key.

I would b leery of buying keys off e-Bay, especially from unauthorized vendors as you may get more than you bargained for, and not in a good way. I personally only buy from authorized vendors. Much safer, and less drama.

    Good luck.

Laptops of recent manufacture have a Windows product key embedded in the BIOS. I think that model is new enough to be like that.

I've never done it, but I believe that the key would be automatically detected for a new Win10 installation. Others may be more certain.
