I agree, it seemed like that to me from the opening post
I was on windows 8.1 with normal hard drive Dell Inspiron 3847, 16 gb memory and all FINE, Then Chrome started getting very slow. I uninstalled Chrome and put it back in, things would work for a day. Lots of freezes started happening. I upgraded to windows 10, loads of high cpu and disk percentages, reset windows 10 a few times, would work for a day but when it slept or hibernated, could never recover, froze, repair, system restore, etc. Days I would be down trying to get back up just from sleeping or hibernation. Tried to go back o 8.1, wouldn't boot, all kind of errors. Tried all resolutions,
The working for a day or two - seems to suggest as I said the drive, but that has been covered with the install of the new drive - ram - \PSU or indeed motherboard

    The error
    [QUOTE]windows system32 config system error code 0000185
    system registry file is missing[/QUOTE
could possibly be the failure to delete all partitions on the SSD, created from the numerous attempts to install 10 - as it appears they were not all deleted but an install attempted on
in an unallocated partition that I hit new and chose 247GB.

I am sorry in advance. I told you I am a novice and have difficulty seeing. I am trying to save money.

Now here is part of what I did wrong.
I took apart my desktop case today, cleaned around, blew out dust and noticed that I had accidentally unplugged my dvd cd player. which is right next to where I installed the samsung evo ssd. I REALIZED I had accidentally taken the power from and sata from the dvd and put in on the new samsung ssd which means I never unplugged the real hard drive.

There was something on the other side of the case that must have been a hard drive but it did not look thick and heavy like other hard drives I have had in past years so I didn't know that was the hard drive (which I think it must be).

So I plugged sata and power to dvd/cd. I plugged sata and power to samsung. I unplugged the power and sata to what must be my hard drive on the other side in a bay and restarted.

    Now I am stuck at
    No boot device available
    sata 0 none
    sata 1 none
    sata 2 installed
    sata 3 installed.
Strike f1 to retry f2 to setup utility

I clicked f2 on setup utility and sata 2 is my dvd and sata 3 is samsung.
Where do I see windows boot manager?

I see as options - I clicked f2 on setup utility and sata 2 is my dvd and sata 3 is samsung.

When I click f2 the options for boot are

    usb floppy device
    internal hdd devices
    usb storage device
    uefi hl dt st dvd
    onboard nic device

Sorry. How do I proceed now? Thank you.

Well there will not be a boot device - because the SATA 3 Samsung Evo has operating system on it to boot
Connect the Samsung to Sata 0
    Boot from the installation usb
delete all partitions on the Samsung and install from the USB
following the procedure here for UEFI clean install

    Clean Install Windows 10
Then if necessary in setup UEFI firmware the first boot device will be Windows Boot manager on SATA0

I am laughing because other wise I might cry. physical disabilities. ugh.

I understand I need to do the whole process over but where is sata 0? Is that a physical plug in the machine? Is that a software change.?
The only reason I know sata 2 is dvd and 3 is samsung is because f2 told me.
I saw a few empty sata plugs but don't know which one is 0.
Does 0 always have to be the boot drive?
It must be a physical change because I moved the sata to hdd1 (written on board), then start up f2, saw it is sata 0 now.

    - - - Updated - - -

All I can say is OH MY GOSH. I spent hours/weeks almost 7 weeks trying to put windows anything 8 or 10 on my old hard drive, It would churn for hours going through the check marks and never be able to boot up. or many miscellaneous errors, or sometimes I got on for a day.
IF i could get up on windows 10 it would work mostly great the whole day UNLESS my machine went to sleep for a long time or hibernated at night.
Then I could never recover. It would freeze. I had to reinstall windows nearly daily or put back on an image file and then lose days of work. Sometimes it would take me 3 days to get back up if I could get back up.
Now when I finally took connections off of old hdd and used ssd on sata 0 it downloaded in like 3 minutes! Lightning fast! I then saw windows boot manager in f2. I hope that means my hard drive really was bad and that I made the right choice to replace it with ssd. Windows is still coming up. I will let you know more after up and using until sleep or hibernate tonight. Thank you!!

It is probably better for YOU to leave it where it is providing everything is OK when you install windows

It must be a physical change because I moved the sata to hdd1 (written on board), then start up f2, saw it is sata 0 now.
I thought you had it in SATA port 3.
which is item 11 on the link below

Best practice is to have the primary boot drive the system drive your Samsung connected SATA 0
See the diagram on page 11
    https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/a...nual_en-us.pdf

the blue coloured SATA port numbered 15.

So i saw instruction to "connect to sata 0". I thought sata 3 would not work. So I moved the wire from the Samsung SSD to what said hdd1. Then I turned on computer, f2, and saw Samsung was now Sata 0. Then I proceeded to add windows.

I haven't been home yet to be able to play with Windows 10. Hoping this works, will for sure, report back.

The old hdd that is in my computer still yet unplugged. Is there a way to hook that up in such a way that the computer recognizes it just as storage, where I can try to get things off of it?
And that windows won't try to boot from it and throw errors?

Thank you all for your help. I will check back in for answer and update.

That drive, if it was that , that caused the problem, with as you mentioned
Started hearing my disk make noise, so I bought a new SSD
may possibly be beyond recovering data
To try after you have windows 10 up and running and if all is OK
connect the drive - providing it is a boot device AFTER the Samsung - in the UEFI setup, the computer will boot from the Samsung.

If it is before the Samsung, then you will have to enter UEFI setup and move the old hard drive off the boot list
To get to settings - if it boots or attempts to boot from the old drive rather than proceeding to load Windows from the Samsung, use F12 one time boot options - boot to 10 and see if the drive is shown in Explorer.
(You will have to start tapping F12 immediately the post screen appears)

If it does boot or attempt to boot from the old drive you then - when in 10 need to follow this
Boot to UEFI Firmware Settings from inside Windows 10

I very much doubt you will find normal access and copying and pasting personal data etc. possible.
Find out if you can see the drive when it is connected and see if indeed to you can access data
Only your personal data can be copied to the new drive, NOT your programs, apps, etc., those must be reinstalled.
DO NOT try to copy data from that old drive to the Windows 10 new Samsung drive at this stage

I hibernated and it started right up . It's hard to believe. I am very thankful.

"DO NOT try to copy data from that old drive to the Windows 10 new Samsung drive at this stage"

Hmm that was what I was going to try to do. Isn't that possible to look for stuff on the original hdd, and copy paste it to the new Samsung? I have on there downloaded programs that are not installed just the downloads I need, pictures, personal documents.
I wasn't going to take anything from Windows and there likely is not a working windows on there now after all I attempted to download to it.

I would love to give you "rep points" if you teach me where and how to do it.
    Thank you!!!!

Lets establish first if you can access this drive
then when we know that I will guide you as to what you can copy and where to put it on the new drive.

    This

So I plugged in the old hard drive. I now see

    Local Disk c
USB Drive D (which there is no usb plugged in. When I double click on D it says Please insert a disk into USB Drive D).
    DVD RW

I see those 3. In disk management D says removeable and shows no size.
I think I am concluding I cannot see the old hard drive??? Since I formatted it?

I plugged in it's old power cord and put sata to hdd2
I hit f2 and saw that nothing changed in boot order.

    UPDATE

Then I opened case and moved old hard drive to odd2 and it didn't then want to start even though bot order was the same. So I moved it back to hdd2 and now I can see another drive (but computer was slow to start)
It is called Local disk D 9GB used 238GB unused. I thought I had a larger disk, ie 500. I did a format a few times trying to install to this disk.
I went to users, I saw all the folders documents etc but there was nothing in them. : (
    Thank you.
