Upgrade HP 15-bw049AU laptop from USB - video problem

Really frustrated with this darned laptop. It is on Win 10 home 1909 and owner has not let it update so now has an error msge on update screen, "Your device is missing important security and quality fixes". Net result it won't update from there.

It also won't update from the Media Creation tool with error saying, after about 4 hours, it couldn't update because of another instance of setup running.

So went to USB option but that won't work either. It does boot but the screen driver is missing as I just get a scrambled trash screen that can't be read. This USB drive will boot on another laptop with a proper screen readout.

I have spent a couple of days on this hence my frustration!

I just want the darned disk upgraded.

    Hoping someone can help.

Hi, resolving upgrade problems may demand patience and repeated attempts.

First perform the following routine basic checks:
    a. Check disk - Hard Disk Sentinel (includes SSDs) - excellent
    b. If ok from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    c. If ok similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

    Advise if these fail.
If ok, check you have at least 30Gb free on C:

Has Windows Update ever been disabled by any means?

What is the precise error message you receive when checking for Windows updates?

What security software is in place?

Note that upgrades must start after logging in (you mention booting from a USB drive).

When you did that, how did you create the bootable drive? What is it- a Win 10 install disk or a live boot disk?

It does boot but the screen driver is missing as I just get a scrambled trash screen that can't be read.
    This is unfamiliar...

Noted- laptop is from around 2018.

    Thanks for reply,
I have run chkdsk /f - no problems
Also DISM and SFC - no problems
    Lots of disk space.
The quote above is the exact error msge when trying to update.
    Only Windows Defender AV.
I have tried multiple ways of triggering an update from within the windows login but all failed.
Used the media creation tool as mentioned to create the USB for another computer. Did it from my desktop and the laptop. Both booted with the rubbish unreadable screen.

I tried another route using the USB made from the laptop . I dbl clicked the setup.exe from the USB drive and it took 5 hours, but it did end! BUT, the laptop reboot came up with the rubbish screen!!

So now, I don't have a usable laptop. I am fine with blasting the drive as I have all files copied and there are only a few programs that need setting up but what a trauma this has been. And I still don't have a Media Creation image I can use to kick this off. The garbage screen is a real mystery. I don't know how to overcome this.

Have you checked the disk? Hard Disk Sentinel as I suggested..

That's completely different to chkdsk and sfc.

This sounds as if when you booted from the disk, you could see screens clearly to allow you to make choices to start the installation process. Note that that would be a clean install- and as part of that you would respond to a prompt to delete all a partitions comprising the old Windows O/S (4 for UEFI). You would then install Windows to unallocated space.

    Is that what you did?

    (Clean install tutorial available).

The section you have quoted wasn't about running the installation from the USB boot up it was about trying to get the win 10 upgraded from the program on the USB . I ran the setup.exe on the USB. I was getting desperate!

I have now got the original 1909 installation back so that is a bonus. BUT when I boot from the USB all I still get is an evenly garbled shimmering screen so no way of kicking off the upgrade. This same USB boots into a usable update screen on another two laptops so it isn't corrupted. It just won't start properly on this one.

There must be a way of getting the media creation tool created USB to boot properly on this darned laptop but I am no nearer finding it.

Alternatively, if I could find a way of the getting the normal 1909 update to work.............

    Thanks for your efforts.

    No.

What I described related to a clean install, which I am presuming was your intent in booting from the USB disk. You said you were willing to wipe it.

So I don't really know what you attempted, nor do I know what you saw when you booted from your USB disk.

It appears that this problem of not updating beyond windows 1909 is because of the A9 dual core AMD cpu.
That's it for me. No more agonising.

There is no reason why you can't install a newer version of Windows 10 on your laptop. Your laptop isn't very old. I have a laptop that is over 10 years old. It is running the latest version of Windows 10 21H1.

I think you're problem is you are trying to update Windows 10 Home 1909. I have seen people have a lot of problems trying to update an old version of Windows 10.

Forget trying to update the computer. Your best bet is to create a USB flash drive with Windows 10 Home 21H1. Then use it to do a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

Please read my earlier entries. I have tried that many times, each try taking 5 hours and always same result with no update and a scrambled unreadable screen.

    I'm well over it.

I have never seen anything like that in 25+ years of messing about with PCs. (Including some laptops.)

Maybe you should try a different path, like a Linux distribution that can be run from a USB drive. Create a bootable USB stick on Windows | Ubuntu It's not intended to fix your problem, but as a test to see whether you can actually boot from a USB drive.
