Problem with Win 10 system repair disk or recovery disk

I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give me regarding safety disks/usb. I have Windows 10 Home 64bit. It says ut is version 19042, 1502

I am trying to make a new up-to-date Windows system repair disk. My previous repair disk seems to boot up fine but the two brand new CDs I've burned have a problem - they boot up as far as the first blue screen (Keyboard layout) but I cannot get past that as the keyboard keys will not work and neither does the mouse, therefore there is no navigating around the page. I tried pressing Enter to choose UK keyboard but, again, nothing happens. I burnt two different CDs and they both do the same, ie Boot up and then Nothing. So, any suggestions - after burning I got a Windows popup message saying it was successful.

The reason I want the new up to date System repair disk is that I get the impression that a Recovery USB will replace the entire Windows 10 installation - all I want is the option to repair existing installation if needed. So am I right - is Recovery a complete reinstall or does it give the option of repair or using a previous restore point ?? I have made a Recovery USB which seems to have taken up about 8.5 gb of a 16 gb USB but I did not want to test it properly in case it went on to replace all my Win 10 installation with an original version.

If you can advise me on successfully burning a new System Repair CD disk, is there any way to then copy the contents of a repair disk onto a USB to create a bootable USB System Repair Drive ??? That would be so much better.

    Thanks in advance

Hi, have you considered using disk imaging? That can be used to protect the whole of your Windows installation - and any other partition you wish to include.

E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external disk for image files.

That gives you a full backup from which you can extract files, and you can restore the partitions- the whole O/S- to a new disk or even potentially a new PC.

1 How are your keyboard & mouse connected? If they are connected by USB then they should work on those screens.

2 You can make a Windows 10 installation USB. It is not merely an installation tool; it can do everything [& more] that a System repair disk / Recovery USB can do.

Recover Windows 10 from a Recovery Drive
A recovery drive is a USB version of a system repair disc with an option to include the system files to be able to also reset Windows 10 from the recovery drive.
When you recover Windows 10 from a drive, here's what will happen:

    • All personal files and user account on your PC will be removed.
    • Any apps and programs that didn't come with your PC will be removed.
    • Windows 10 will be re-installed (reset) from the recovery drive connected to your PC. (unless your PC came with Windows 8/8.1 and a recovery partition from your PC manufacturer, in which case it'll reinstall the version of Windows that came with your PC).
    • If you've repartitioned your system drive, this will restore its default partitions

    Recovery options

Thanks for above replies. To answer a couple of points, my mouse and keyboard are connected via USB ports so I really don't know why the booted disk is not navigable. Though, as I said, I then tried my older System repair disk and it worked fine ! And Windows reported my transfer as being successful. They were brand new CDs I used.

Next, I will look at the tutorial that was suggested re making a bootable USB Flash drive using the Media Creation tool - could be the answer as long as it gives me options to repair or get to do a System Restore. I'll check it out.

I will also look at the Macrium suggestion although I think I already have Aomei Backupper on my system and I believe Aomei has various backup options - is that correct??

Aomei Backupper should be fine- it covers both disk imaging- so good you're aware of that- and file backup, with a simpler GUI. Macrium has a couple of useful repair tools as well, and the paid version some very neat advanced features; the free version doesn't include incremental imaging or file backup.

Is the keyboard/mouse difficulty perhaps related to needing USB3 drivers?

    Bootable USB flash drive

Dalchina, the USB drivers you mention are , I presume, already on my system because I use the same mouse and keyboard all the time on my PC so I don't know why the booted System Repair disk doesn't want to work with mouse or keyboard !!!

While I'm posting this I have downloaded the Media Creation tool and am currently making a bootable USB drive as per instructions in the tutorial. It is currently downloading onto a blank USB 8 gb drive. So, am I right in thinking that once I have done this, it will give me the same repair/restore functions that I would get on a System Repair disk??? If it will do this then I don't need to worry about making a new System repair disk, do I ??

    Yes. And more.
My previous post omitted any reference to System Restore - TenForumsTutorials because System restore is nowhere near as effective or as reliable as using system images.

    Correct.

That the drivers are on your system disk is irrelevant when booting from a bootable disk.
The question then is whether the appropriate drivers are made available from and included on the bootable disk.

A related question is whether you can navigate your BIOS/UEFI interface.
