HP Pavillion G6 upgrade from 20h2 to 21H1 failed

Tried to upgrade from 20H2 to 21H1 on HP Pavillion G6 but at the end it said "Undoing changes to your computer" and reverted to 20H2.

Does this mean that this laptop cannot be upgraded to 21H1?

    Edited typo

Hi, this PC could be from around as long ago as 2011, depending on the exact model. If so, continuing successful upgrade is not guaranteed of course.

How did you attempt to upgrade?
    a. Were you offered the upgrade by Windows Update?
    b. Did you download the update manually, and then manually attempt to upgrade?
(MS applies 'Safeguard Holds' to protect incompatible devices- manually upgrading may circumvent that)

Diagnosing upgrade failures is time consuming and requires logs collected by special tools. There are many possible causes.

As usual, please post a screenshot of your partitions using a 3rd party partition manager such as Minitool Partition Manager.

What security software are you using?
What tweaks or 3rd party tools have you used, if any, to control Windows Update or so-called telemetry?
Have you checked your disk - e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel (functional trial)?
How much free space do you have on C: ?
Is your BIOS as up to date as it can be?

Get a copy of setupdiag.exe (free from MS) and run that and post the report. (Tutorial available).

    Hi @dalchina
The laptop was bought in 2013.
The 21H1 was not offered by WU. I went to Windows Medi tool page and clicked on Upgrade now which run the full process at which point it said it was “Undoing changes to the computer”.
Security software on laptop Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Premium.
No 3rd party software used to control WU.
I am now in the process of cloning the HDD and replacing with SSD.
There is enough space on C:.
Has latest BIOS version according to HP Assistant is F.27 but according to setupdiag report it is F.25!!

Hi, 0xC1900101-0x20017 is typical of a driver-related issue.

You may find more information in setuperr.log, setupact.log.
Locations: probably in the Rollback phase - you can find their locations here:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...8-e9c6714349b9

Before you eventually try again, as it's possible there is a MS Safeguard hold (you've not been offered this by WU) and as you hopefully are anyway if you're following the endlessly given advice here, please make sure you have a current disk image.

On a practical point, 21H1 offers nothing new- it's almost exclusively bug fixes- rather a lot of them.
Consider uninstalling Malwarebytes temporarily; although this may not be the cause, it's a standard recommendation.

Sorry, forgot to paste in the link to the log file references. Now done.

    Did those come from
The following log files are created when an upgrade fails, and the installation rollback is initiated:

    • C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.log
    • C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback\setupact.err
    Is your audio driver Conexant?

    See:
Windows 10 May 2021 Update common problems — and the fixes | Windows Central

Note in particular- on the basis of the information you've provided:
    Uninstall security apps

The error codes 0xC1900101 0x20017 and 0xC1900101 0x30017 may appear if there an issue with third-party security software.
Usually, you can mitigate this problem by temporarily uninstalling the third-party antivirus, anti-spyware, and any other security solution installed on the device.
although as I said, the problem could be something quite different.

Audio driver is provided by Microsoft version 10.0.19041.264.

Will now Malwarebytes Premium which is the only 3rd party security software and try some of the fixes in your link above.

Ok, can you post a link to its original driver download page please?
I'm going to guess that has something different.
