    Latitude E6540 Upgrade to 20H2

I'm trying to update 2 Latitude E6540's both with W10 1909 (10.0.18363.1556) to 20H2, both systems hang at 48% after the initial reboot. I am sure this is driver related, but not sure what can be done to get past this issue.

The setup diag tool reports (full log attached):

Error: Found a device installation failure during device install phase.
    Device Installation failure detected!
    Device Description: *PNP0C04 [NO_DRV_X]
    HardwareId: ACPI\PNP0C04\4&1a5b7ca9&0
    Inf Name: machine.inf
    Driver Version: 10.0.19041.1

"PNP0C04" seems to indicate the issue is with the numeric data processor driver, but there are no available updates for any drivers on either system.

Anyone have any suggestions what could be a potential solution?

Hi, just wondering- is this your post?

How are you trying to upgrade? Via Windows Update or manually?
The latter could circumvent a MS Safeguard hold.

@dalchina - That Dell post is not mine, I had previously seen that post and it was not helpful

Thank you very much for your reply.

But it does usefully indicate the problem is machine related, and not just individual. As such it would have been worth you mentioning it and saved me time.

2nd part of previous post, please?

Note: nothing is guaranteed about updating from one Win 10 build to another wiht a machine not approved for Win 10, which I'm assuming is the case with yours.

I seem to recall that post referred to ensuring the BIOS was the latest. Is it?

Do you have a drive that can be used to replace the existing and do a clean install?

@dalchina - I am sure that it is machine related. I've tried upgrading manually and via Windows Update, both produce the same results.

@Megahertz - I do have a drive that I could attempt a clean install, but I'd rather not put the user through this if possible. I only want to do a fresh install as a last resort.

You can by all means run a disk check e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel- excellent assessment right on its GUI; run chkdsk /scan from an admin command prompt...

but more info is needed from logs if possible. Otherwise it's a guessing game.

When you tried the upgrade did you get as far as being asked if you wanted to accept updates? I'm guessing not.. Should you do so, try not.

Sometimes it's necessary to run an in-place upgrade repair install of the same build.

    Bottom line:
Why the urgency to upgrade an old PC to 21H1 which confers no functional benefit?

Wait until it's offered via Windows Update.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
The point about doing a clean install of 21H1 on that machine on a spare disk would be to prove it can run it.
