Cannot upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

I am trying to upgrade to windows 10 pro after doing a clean install of Windows 10.
After installing Activation shows that Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your microsoft account.
I then enter the key to do the upgrade.
get msg Unable to upgrade your edition. We can't activate windows on this device because you don't have a valid digital license or product key. If you think you do have a valid license or key, select troubleshoot below. (0x803fa067)
there is no troubleshoot below. all you can do is close

In the last month or so I have re installed Windows 10 home and then done the upgrade using the same key that was given me years ago. I also ran ShowKey and the information is still the same.

I have done the virtual Help link and you get connected to foreign sites that you cannot understand the directions.

lost at what to do. With the upcoming announcement I want to have this machine to be the same as the other two.
this machine along with my wife's were new some months ago. did not have any problems installing and upgrading hers.

Shipinomore. I have several times verified the microsoft acccount and get the codes sent to me to enter. all OK

I have 21h1 19043-1055 running and it was re installed last night.

Let me make sure that I understand correctly: Are you saying that you already used a Windows 10 Pro key to upgrade this system to Pro previously? If that is the case, then there is no need to first install Home and upgrade. Simply go right to installation of Pro but do not enter any key during installation.

If my understanding was incorrect, my apologies. If you could clarify this for me in that event I would appreciate it.

Cannot upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

hsehestedt I don't have a install iso for 10 Pro. I have done it this way in the past for years.
my last usb that I created with the MCT just installed 10 home. some time ago when you would download you got a list of the version windows 10 and you checked box for pro and went on. I take it that the key that they gave me was for windows 10 Pro.?
Shipinomore is there a link to download windows 10 pro iso or even to create it with MCT?

That still didn't answer my question so I'm still not clear on what you are actually doing so I'll simply put it this way:

If you had previously installed and activated Windows 10 Pro on this same machine, then YOU DO NOT NEED A KEY to install Windows 10 Pro again and you do not need to install Home first.

Yes - you can download a Win 10 Pro image using the Media Creation Tool. Simply run the tool and choose the option to create installation media. That media will have multiple editions (Win 10 Home, Pro, etc.) all on the same media.

The current 21H1 USB (or ISO) created by the MCT contains multiple versions: Home, Home N, Education Education N, Pro, Pro N.

See Full Details about a Windows 10 ISO file or USB

If you were not asked for a key when you did the clean install, but it went straight into installing Home, then the PC has a key for its original OEM install of Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 Home embedded in its bios. You can see this key and what type it is with ShowKeyPlus

Cannot upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

hsehestedt I just created a usb device using MCT and I installed windows 10 yesterday with it. I did a clean install. I did not get the question about a key to answer I don't have a key. I thought it was strange but they keep changing things. no time did a choice to what version I wanted to install. I was a member of the group that did testing somewhat. I was running 8.1 Pro at the time so I am sure that the key was for pro?
I will try again to create a usb and do it on the machine which is a problem

    Thank you for time

As I explained, this PC was supplied by the OEM with W8/8.1/10 Home preinstalled and has a key for a Home edition of Windows embedded in its bios. Setup can read this key so it doesn't need to ask you for one.

You will get the same result, Home will be installed without asking you for a key.

Has this PC previously had Win10 Pro installed and activated? If so, then it has a digital licence for Pro and you can upgrade Home to Pro by entering the generic Pro key.

As you have a OEM computer that came with Win 10 Home, your computer has an ID on BIOS that says that the computer was made for Win 10 Home.
That is why, during installation, it doesn't ask what version you want to install (Home or Pro) and it doesn't ask for a key.

If you once had Win 10 Pro activated on that computer, as Bree already pointed, all you have to do is to change the license key to a generic Pro key and it will activate.
