Wait a minute, the ISOs for 21H1 list version 10.0.19041, but my system says it's at 10.0.19042!
That would explain why the in-place update doesn't work, right?
The base level for all the versions of 1904x will be 19041. Depending on what options you choose going forward or the enablement packages you opt in for, you may go to 19042 or 19043. The base, internally, is still 19041.

No. The method of retrieving properties cannot distinguish between Versions that are based on the 10.0.19041 kernel.
Your results are correct but they have no significance.
My 21H1 ISO also reports Version : 10.0.19041

You can distinguish between the Versions of Windows that are installed, just not the ISO/InstallUSB.
See, just for example, ReportOSVersion.bat post - TenForums

What happens when you go to ms-settings:regionlanguage? What do you see, what happens when you add/remove/change things?

Using the ISO from Download Windows 10 ISO File - TenForumsTutorials [Option 1], then running the Repair install from there using Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - TenForumsTutorials [Step 4 - using an ISO file] I've described above, but now I see that it's giving me an older version than I have (or at least Windows thinks it has, after the update SNAFU).
After discovering this, I went to Option 5 (
TechBench by WZT), it says it has even a 19043. Downloading that now.

    Aw, that's why
    Never mind, then ^^

    Benjamin,

1 I'm getting concerned that this language issue is distracting from the core problem. I have never suffered any ill-effects when performing Repair installs and our dism /online /get-intl language properties are so similar that I do not think it is anything to do with your problem.

ms-settings:regionlanguage is something that you enter in, for example, the Run dialog [right click on the Start button then select Run].
Or get to the same place using Settings, Time & language, Language
In both cases, these are actions carried out in Windows and are nothing to do with TenForums.

2 I did not understand what you were saying in

and assumed that your next update would clarify matters. I think your WZT ISO download will have completed by now so you'll have a Version 21H1 ISO file to use.

    Already disregarded.

You can use the ms-settings: Protocol in HTML a hrefs, see for example Windows 10 Settings Links Launch List Guide - Tenop IT Solutions
But tenforums's link embedding system butchers these links, as described above.

When I wrote the above, I hadn't seen your explanation about current versions all being based on the 19041 kernel, not indicating final build versions.
For transparency, and because I don't know how to completely delete a post, I left it in as strikethrough text, superseding it with "never mind", when I learned that my initial understanding was wrong.

The new ISO sadly brought nothing new to the table.

PS: I was only asking about your language issue because you said you'd never gotten it resolved, and I was wondering at what point/how corrective measures failed, but you probably talked to enough people about it by this point. Sorry if that caused more confusion ^^

    Benjamin,

0 Can we take that as a new starting point then?

1 Your ISO is Version 21H1 and you downloaded it using TechBench WZT [Option 5 of Download Windows 10 ISO File - TenForumsTutorials]?

2 If you double-click on it, it 'mounts' as a virtual DVD drive?
Repair install/in-place upgrade not proceeding normally-iso-mounted.png

3 Have you tested the ISO file structure's integrity?
    - Copy the …\sources\install.wim or …\sources\install.esd file somewhere else [anywhere else that's big enough & for which you have access].
Repair install/in-place upgrade not proceeding normally-install-wim.png Repair install/in-place upgrade not proceeding normally-install-esd.png
    - If there is a copy error [… cannot find file …] then the file has been corrupted during download.
    - You can delete the copy afterwards. It was only a by-product of the test.

4 If you are logged in to an Admin account and you double-click on its setup.exe, you get the responses stated in Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - TenForumsTutorials [Steps 1,2,3,4,7+]?
    - There is nothing documented to suggest that using the Built-in admin for a Repair install will cause problems but it should not be used for the job because failures would be impossible to diagnose.
    - In any response about problems, please be specific about steps done successfully & steps producing errors or we'll be here all day.

    Denis

I think we should stop bothering every other user of this rather major thread with every detail of attempted progress. If you agree then, in your next post, include

    Yes.

Yes. Although, coming to think of it, I'm using WinCDEmu to do that, which I installed at some point in the past and have been using ever since. TBH, I missed the memo that Win 10 can mount disc images natively now. Look at our OS, doing things on its own; it's growing up. I'm so proud!
Let me see if uninstalling WinCDEmu and mounting it "natively" changes anything.
-> No, still starting a full fat fresh installation.

I did unpack one or two of the ISOs at some point, in a desperate clutching at straws, with no errors.
Now I copied the .wim as a sanity check: Also no errors (would have been quite unlikely, that all the images I downloaded would have damaged install images which all reported no error beyond the observed misbehavior, but now we know)

My user account is an administrator account, if that's what you mean; I am not using the built-in Admin account.
My experience diverges at step 7: instead of a small splash screen, I get the full-screen borderless window on top as pictured here
Are you saying I should try using the built-in Admin account?

I'm doing my best, I mostly didn't know what else to add.
I didn't know how un-straight-forward my problem seems to be.

Thank you for all your time and patience!

No. Not at all. I just wanted to make sure that such a potential complication was not affecting matters.

I'll study the rest of your post now.
