Home made Windows install ISO query

    Hi folks
To make a "Home Grown" Windows install ISO is it sufficient simply to use dism capture WIM from a system you want to use as your base install and replace the install WIM in the standard ISO or do other steps need to be taken.

I want a base Windows with just the admin account and some installed software such as Office 2019

I'm not too bothered about missing the odd driver as those can usually be got after install from the internet.

Anybody done this -- I don't want to mess about with Windows PE or whatever --I'm not intending to roll out this over a network for a lot of corporate PC's but for about 6 / 7 - mostly family etc -- If I get it right it saves ages of time by esacaping from kids saying "My PC doesn't work etc etc !!!!!".

Working from a standard set of Windows makes this task a lot easier - my versions are all VL so no probs with "Activations" etc.

    Cheers

    Win 10 Pro 64-bit v1909 - Build 18363 Custom ISO Install

    Hello @jimbo45,

I have created custom installs since Win Vista. I have tried a variety of different programs over the years. For Win 10, I found that Win Reducer was ideal for my purposes. It creates an Installation USB. I have NOT included Programs in the build although there is a facility for this.

Some of the benefits available are to be able to Integrate Cursors, Themes, Wallpapers, Applications, Drivers, Net Framework 3.5, Language Files, Unattended Files or Windows Updates, along with Removing Windows Components etc etc.

I usually build the Base system and then I have BAT, PS1, REG, CMD files that I run Post Installation to do the rest.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi there
    Thanks for that info

Gives me something to play with --- I used to use the old VISTA/WIN7 etc app to Integrate and remove Windows components years ago I think it was called nLite or something similar.

I've got quite a few spare old 2.5 inch laptop HDD's and some older SSD's so I'll play with these -- and if I can automate the way of installing as Win2GO systems - makes a good way of testing too -- I've easily managed now to convert WINDOWS VM's (from QEMU/KVM on a Linux box) to Win2GO systems running on a real machine including W2K19 server that I've fiddled with to make it work nicely as a workstation OS. !!

    Cheers

    Hello @jimbo45,

I can NOT remember them ALL, but here are a few that I have tried . . .

    • WinReducer
    • DISM
    • DISM++
    • NTLite
    • GImageX

Some may need the Windows Automated Installation Kit [ WAIK ] available.

    I hope this helps.
