Installed 21H1 but install data shows November 2020?

Hey everyone, I did the 21H1 update, it seemed to have downloaded through windows update and requested reboot - but it did not do any updating during the reboot process, just booted up as normal. OS build info shows 21H1, but shows November 2020 as install data.

On another computer it went through the install properly, and shows May 2021 as install date.

In the taskbar search box type: winver
    Then post a screenshot.

    It should look like this...
The last 3 digits in the OS Build no. may be different.

    Run setupdiag: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...rade/setupdiag

Post a share link using one drive, drop box, or google drive.

The last couple of Microsoft Feature updates have been delivered using a new distribution system - This works by including parts of the final update in with standard patch tuesday and other updates. these will have dates and ID tags that match the version current when they are issued and downloaded

When It is decided to release the feature update MS send out a small Enablement update which activates the inactive features, A lot, if not all, of the 21H1 update was distributed as parts of updates to 20H2.

I can only think that the system is designed to share the load on Microsoft's servers and older client systems over a longer time frame

The enablement package method merely flips a switch on previously installed version so code already installed features are switched on rather than off. So technically nothing has been reinstalled. The WinRE partition is still seen as 20H2.

Interestingly, I upgraded my travel laptop to 21H1 but decided to reset it as it one of those 32GB mmc laptops but it was full of garbage.

So I used reset, expecting it to revert to 20H2 as that was what WinRE is. I was pleasantly surprised it reset to 21H1 automatically.

The last time, an enablement package method was used, there were issues on resetting (fixed later with a cumulative update) but , even then, you had to restore to old version, then re-enable.

I was expecting similar but it reset to 21H1.

Well done MS in getting reset right this time!

Only minor grip is winre shows as 20H2 now ‐ the enablement package should flip version number. It confused me a second when I installed Macrium Reflect 8 as I thought I had reverted to 20H2 for some reason, then I remembered same happened last time.

Shows the same version, but I'm pretty sure that is not what is installed. A snapshot of system registry from both systems - where it installed properly and the one where I suspect it did not. Note it doesn't have 5/21 source os folder.

I think you're fine. Mine is dated July 2020, which just happens to be when I did an In-Place Upgrade.

On another computer it went through the install properly, and shows May 2021 as install date.

This is normal if you updated from 2004 or 20H2 to 21H1. Windows Update just installs a small enablement package that turn on the dormant features that are already in your system files after the latest cumulative update. Because no new system files were installed (you can tell this because there will be no windows.old folder), then the OS install date is still the original install date of your 2004.

On another computer it went through the install properly, and shows May 2021 as install date.

If that computer was updated through windows update, then it must have had 1909 or earlier on it before the update. 1909 or earlier would require a full install of new OS system files to update it to 21H1.

Updating by an in-place upgrade using an ISO file made by the MCT would also perform a full OS install, regardless of the version you were upgrading from. That would also set the OS install date to the same date as the upgrade.

Besides the Version number changing the first 5 digits of the Build is now 19043 while on the previous it was 19042 with .985 staying the same.
