It will fix some registry problems.

Best bet is to get into the habit of doing regular image backups using a program like Macrium Reflect to an alternate internal or an external HDD/SSD.

Yep, after 20+ years with Windows, now with Win10 it seems a necessity. The way that MS behaves should be illegal. I can't think of any other industry where the maker forces you to make modifications, which then often harm the product and the maker is not in the tiniest bit responsible. Or even cares much.

I have begun using MR7 since a few weeks ago after the bad update. I wish the news had been filled for years with headlines periodically: your next Windows Update might seriously harm your computer.

    >> Many people are alive only because it's illegal to shoot them.

    That's catchy :)

We don't buy Windows, we only buy a license to use it, still our choice to do so or not, other things available.

Considering the variety of hardware, third party apps, and hackers/hobbyists/clueless users Windows supports/works with, it's sort of amazing that Windows works as well as it does - when I think about it.

I definitely feel M$ needs some serious competition other than Unix flavors (that can run Windows apps) to keep them on their toes - as they seem to have a monopoly now.

But most of those 'flavors' of Linux are free. As for a monopoly, back in the latter half of the '90s there was an investment by a man of about $140,000,000 for non-voting stock in Apple, prevented a monopoly existing in the industry.

That doesn't address at all what I'd said about forced updates harming the product.

And owning or not doesn't change a thing, either. We still pay for it.

But I suppose you do have the choice to pop up and defend Microsoft in threads where people are having extended problems with what Microsoft does.

@Bob1212 -- "...forced updates harming the product..." I can absolutely relate to this! Using W7Pro, some time ago added SpyBot Anti-Beacon to keep W10 from updating my two W7 laptops. And, have been using SecurityXploded's Windows Updater Disabler on both laptops. If/when I need update[s], after weeks or months of X rollout, I can Re-Enable WU, download and install what I want, then DisAble WU via that utility. Of course, I can't prove anything, however, a few times, I really have had troubles with W7 after X Y Z WUs installed, either fixed via uninstalling X Y Z or by restoring a full image made before X Y Z.

Thanks, Roland, I'll keep SecurityXploded's Windows Updater Disabler in mind for the future. I really like the idea of "install what I want". I've also looked at the tutorial by Brink that's here.

Meanwhile, I've been learning a small live Linux on a USB for emergency use, for now and for when Microsoft does it again.

Bob1212, I really do not know how the W10's version of that utility will work...please, if you dnld and use it, let us know how that worked for you. Also, be aware, the menu face gives you what you can pick and do next, it does not "tell" you what you earlier picked. It takes a little getting used to.
