Yes it's safe.

You probably will lose some programs... and the settings are different in Win 7 and Win 10.

IMO, it's best to do a clean install of Windows 10.

Hi, the safe approach is to first create a disk image- as is endlessly recommended to do routinely here- before attempting the upgrade. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for image files.

a. There may be some programs which are incompatible with Win 10.
b. There may be some drivers which are incompatible with Win 10- rarely you might struggle to get a driver for some particular hardware.
c. The upgrade process may fail- usually it will roll back rather than cause your PC to become unbootable. Hence the disk image.
d. Diagnosing upgrade failures despite extensive log analysis may run to days and over 100 posts, with no guarantee of success.
e. Remember that if your PC has no intrinsic support for Win 10, upgrading to any build of Win 10 is at your risk, with no guarantee of there not being problems with a subsequent build upgrade.

- uninstall any security software
- ensure you have at least 30Gb free on C:
- disconnect any unnecessary peripherals

Activation should be automatic and free based on your Win 7 license, assuming it's valid.

All my Win7 machines that upgraded to Win10 have kept all their installed apps. Only a very few will need to be uninstalled, and then only if known to be incompatible with Win10. Microsoft Security Essentials, for example (which is not needed as it is replaced by Defender). Setup will tell you if any apps need uninstalling and not proceed until you tell it to go ahead.

Most programs will be OK, I have some that are more than 20 years old, such as PaintShop Pro 7.


As for settings, most will be retained, but some may be reset to their defaults. All your user accounts will remain in place.

Does Microsoft still have that utility that will analyze a Windows 7 desktop or laptop, then display and/or printout what is Windows 10 compatible, what needs to be changed, and what will not work?
