I did go 20+ yrs with Windows and didn't need to do all this until now. I've ordered a 256GB USB flash to have in addition to my external HDD for System Images. Then I will try the repair-install, with 2 backup System Images on hand. My new motto: any update pushed by MS might be the last time I can use my computer.

I have run sfc and DISM many times and many hours expended, and finally fixed all file problems (some corrupted, some with 'both files have wrong hash') only when I had the downloaded ISO as the source for DISM - and only when I used the correct cmd of the two that get recommended for /repairhealth. (lucydog encountered the same problem of "sources not found" in that very recent thread, because neither of us can correctly connect online to windows update to get the sources.)

Days ago, chkdsk ran at bootup found and fixed some errors.

It has been more than exasperating. Even the recovery CD I made via Macrium R7 wouldn't boot, though the Windows made one does boot and the Macrium made USB does boot. Go figure.

Laptop is 1.5 yrs old, had zero problem until the forced March update.

Did check disk found bad clusters, bad blocks, bad sectors etc?
