Bree, that's what I thought when I bought the new computer, but when I went to Activation to go to HOME, the only option I saw was $99 for PRO or a product key. Guess ... no, I mean for certain, it's all too late now. Thank you all again.
You may have to be signed in to a MS account.

    Well, consider this...

A Win 7 notebook (let's say old Toshiba) with an unused Win 7 Pro COA (sticker) key and a new PC (let's say cheap replacement) - that Toshiba key may be used to activate the Cheapo

I don't see anything in the EULA preventing this (regarding unused OEM keys).

Morally perhaps not quite kosher ... but unless you scared of burning in hell - that's an alternative.

    too late

Winuser and Superfly. too late. MS now has 99 more dollars. They probably need it. I don't recall having a Tosh W7 OEM labeled CD .... and if I did, it's long gone now. I really don't care for a Windows computer to use a MS account and always set em up as a user account. I name 'em all OWNER.

Morality be damned. The computer may have died, but I still own the license, if not the product. Or maybe I don't.

Thank you all for the time and advice.

No, it would have been a CoA sticker on the bottom of a laptop (or the back/side of a desktop).

LOL .. Yup but the sticker may be in the battery compartment - why waste it?

it's on the bottom of the Tosiba

Yep, yep, yep. Right there on the bottom. Tosh Product key. Of course, .. I strongly suspect it is too late. Cheapo now has an active W10 Pro .... Uh.... I think it was $99. Yeah, .. $99. I will record the Tosh key in case I can use it again some day. Thank you gentlemen. Thank you.

The license on the Toshiba is of no use to you.

    (snip)
I should have said "in principle", or "according to my understanding of the Microsoft EULA".

What MS would allow in real life is a different matter. They may not be all that strict about switching a license to new hardware, even when it is nominally not within their stated rules.
