Upgrade problem w/ Windows 10, want to save all data

Whwn I get to the point of choosing to save my data or a clean install, it rules out saving my data.

Hi, there are some useful suggestions here (ignore the promotional stuff at the start):

You should certainly uninstall any 3rd party security software before upgrading.

I then downloaded Microsoft's MediaCreationTool.exe to start an upgrade. The tool said it ran into a problem and could not proceed.

It's unclear from that at what point in the process the failure occurred.

Approach this by
a. creating a Win 10bootable disk using the MS media creation tool.
b. uninstall any 3rd party security software.
c. Perform basic checks:
run
chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command prompt
if ok run
SFC /SCANNOW
similarly

How much free space do you have on C: ? You need at least 25Gb, 30Gb safer.
Have you ever changed the default installation path for programs in the registry?

Post a screenshot of your partitions using a 3rd party partition manager- not disk management.

Ensure your disk image (Aomei Backupper) included all your O/S partitions. Not just C:

Now boot normally, and log in.
Insert the bootable disk
Open that in file explorer
Run setup.exe

Note/screenshot and post as text any error message that occurs exactly.
Search tenforums and elsewhere for that message.

Run Setupdiag.exe (free from MS) and post the result.

Please note diagnosing failure to upgrade can be arduous, tedious, repetitive and ultimately unproductive. See example threads here.

Creating the bootable disk
a. lets you retry without downloading 4Gb or so again
b. gives you a basic repair tool

I take it the 'RAID' name has no significance?

One of the options you have when using the Media Creation tool (Google) is .... to create a bootable disk.

previously I incorrectly referred to rt clicking an iso, click Mount- this is not available in Win 7 apparently - corrected.
