Hello, I have purchased a retail Windows 10 USB to install it over a Windows 7 Dell. Whwn I get to the point of choosing to save my data or a clean install, it rules out saving my data. There must be someway around this. It is a very basic need for users.
Are you booting the computer from the USB flash drive? To upgrade you need to boot into Windows 7, then insert the flash drive and run setup.exe from it. Also, was there a specific for purchasing the retail Windows 10 when you can download it directly from Microsoft for free?
I will try your suggestion. There was no specific instructions to download for free. I thought that was no longer available.

You may wish to consider using the free upgrade and saving the windows 10 retail you have bought for use on another computer, that does not have a windows installation on it.

As the others have said, you can still upgrade from Win7 to Win10 for free. This tutorial is specifically tailored for upgrading from Win7.

When performing a clean install all partitions are deleted making an unallocated drive.
Windows is then installed creating default partitions.
Drivers and applications are installed.
Backed up files are restored.
Clean Install Windows 10
Windows 7 and 8 upgrades are still free.

I ran into another problem trying to do this upgrade. Before trying to install I checked the Dell list of supported models for upgrading to Windows 10. My computer, Dell M4600 Workstation service tag 4PVMKQ1 is not supported and no install download documents are provided.
Computer manufacturers may not create / test drivers for newer operating systems.

That shouldn't really be a problem. 'Not supported' just means it's too old a model for it to be worth Dell's time testing it for Windows 10.
I have yet to find a Dell that won't run Windows 10. At least yours is supported with drivers up to Win8 x64, which is more than can be said for my Dell Latitude E4310. Mine's older than yours (OCT 2010 vs. MAY 2011) and only has drivers up to Win7. Doesn't stop it running the current Windows 10 though, 20H1 build 19042.870. The availability of Win8 drivers is an encouraging sign, if it can run W8 then it should be able to run W10 (and if needed, Win8 drivers can be used in Win10).
Actually, I've yet to find any PC that won't run Win10. All six of my laptops from various OEMs do, the oldest being a Samsung from 2009. Of the six, only two are certified by their OEM as 'supported for W10'.
If you want to see if your PC can run Windows 10, don't check on the Dell site. Just look on eBay and see how many are for sale with W10...
