Try downloading the iso using the Heidoc iso downloader tool (free) - Google.

It's also mentioned in the tutorial on downloading an iso file.

Be careful to choose the correct file for your PC.

Here's the error message which I've screen OCR'd for you for search purposes if you wish to do that.

There was a problem running this tool We're not sure what happened, but we're unable to run this tool on your PC. If you continue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support.
    Error code: 0x80072F76 - 0x20016

Are you running any 3rd party security software?

The 0x80072f76-0x20016 error reported by the MCT may be due to the same reasons that you want to try the in-place repair in the first place. Rather than try to debug the error, it's simpler to use an alternative method to download the .ISO you need direct from Microsoft.

To download an ISO from the same page you downloaded the MCT, try Option Three in the tutorial: Download Windows 10 ISO File

    Another problem

My laptop continually tries to install fingerprint swipe drivers. I have found that the fingerprint drivers and bio-metric hardware do not exist. It was probably wiped off of the BIOS by a Microsoft update from what I see online. It has an A02 bios. I tried to update it and it says I need to install A03 first, but when trying that it says that my system is incompatible with A03. Should I try to reinstall the A02 bios. It seems like i am getting further and further away from my objective Windows 10 on this laptop.

I suggest you at least achieve downloading an iso file.

Your laptop seems to be from around 2011. As such there's no absolute guarantee of it running Win 10 without problems, although many do run Win 10 out of spec. like this.

Can you cite precedent for this PC running Win 10?

    Dell says:
Your Precision M4600 supports these operating systems:

    • BIOS
    • FreeDOS
    • Red Hat® Enterprise Linux 6
    • Ubuntu 10.10
    • Windows 7, 32-bit
    • Windows 7, 64-bit
    • Windows 8, 32-bit
    • Windows 8, 64-bit
    • Windows Vista, 32-bit
    • Windows Vista, 64-bit
    • Windows XP
    • Windows XP, 64-bit

    https://www.dell.com/support/home/en...mpatibilitymsg

    - Win 10 is not supported.

That's not to say it won't run... but that's then at your risk.

There are 64 bit drivers to Win 8, including what looks to be BIOS A19 from 2018.

It's interesting that people with older PCs almost never post the driver update page for us.

You should update your BIOS before attempting the upgrade.

Your PC appears to support fingerprint:

Note: these reports indicate failure to upgrade from Win 7 with this device, but clean install can work... perhaps with some reservations:

as you have 7, there is no right click and mount for the ISO to then click setup
Are you trying to Mount the ISO OR are you attempting to upgrade from the download of the media creation tool
Upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 for Free
in other words -as on the link - click download tool now - accept conditions - click on upgrade this pc now.

The likely cause of the error you receive IF you are using the downloaded Media Creation tool - as against the created and then extracted ISO on 7 as here
ISO - Disk Image File : Extract to the Desktop - Windows 7 Help Forums

is the incompatibility of third party software, or a possible Dell security setting in that workstation.

    Installation Successful

I decided to update my BIOS before going any further. This was not especially easy. Not all Dell M4600's have the same BIOS to start with and you can't just jump to any BIOS and install it. My laptop had BIOS A02 and my attempts to install A03 were unsuccessful at first. BIOS A03 is needed to jump to BIOS A19 directly. Somehow I found an A03 download that worked. I have have had no problems since the A19 update.

My M4600 had Windows 7 Ultimate installed. I found a web page showing which Windows versions of 7 could be upgraded to what. I created a bootable USB flash, downloaded the ISO from Microsoft, and used the MCT tool to proceed with install. I expected to be given a choice to save all files and apps that was greyed out and unusable: however, it started as default to save all files and apps. It may have something to do with the 7 Ultimate version which will only upgrade to Pro or Enterprise. I also expected it to ask for the media key code in order to save the apps as well. It never asked for it. At first glance everything looks ok now.

I am concerned about one thing, I read that there was a Windows Update 20H2 which would prevent the saving of my apps. Now that the install in finished and working, if this update installs, will my apps disappear? I think Microsoft probably deleted that update from its list a long time ago, otherwise i would not have my apps intact right not.

One last thing, If I have an option to upgrade this further by going to Windows 10 Enterprise, should I do it?

Thanks everyone for your help. The suggestions gave me a lot of reading material and better understanding.

Hi, if I understand correctly, you have managed to upgrade to Win 10. If so, you're lucky!

I am concerned about one thing, I read that there was a Windows Update 20H2 which would prevent the saving of my apps.
I don't understand the connection...the risk to apps.

Please note that it's really wise to hold back a bit on updates. Unlike Win 7, which generally always aimed to keep the same specification, Win 10's is a continually moving target. That means sometimes MS messes up updates- sometimes quite badly.

For example, they pretty much broke Windows search in the early days of build 1909 and it took several updates to sort that out with further changes into 2004.

20H2 has given people with certain printers significant difficulty.

I suggest you hang back a couple of months - as you have Pro you can easily do this using Group Policy to set updates to Notify- meaning you are notified, and only when you accept is the update or upgrade applied (at end of build service life this can change).

There is a News article per update per build - with download links- in the News section. Also simple searches e.g.
    Windows 20H2 problems
    can help.
