Tried everything to upgrade to Windows 10 but in vain. Please help.

    Hello,

I would like to know if i can cancel my reservation from the Get Windows 10 app so that i don't get the prompt every now and then and then upgrade from a bootable media later on?

I've tried all possible solution out there to upgrade my windows 8.1 to 10 but nothing is working out for me.

    Things attempted so far:

    1. Downloaded the windows 10 from windows update 4 times and everytime it got stuck at preparing for installation. Left it for 24hrs, nothing happened.
I've tried most of the tips available on net like safeboot, sfc, deleted files & folders and all but nothing!

2.Then downloaded the Media Creation Tool. After executing, it creates a folder $Windows.~WS size 44MB and then nothing happens. I did deleted the folder and tried running the tool but nothing happened other than that folder got created once again. Ran it as administrator although i am logged in as a admin.

    3. Downloaded 64 Bit Windows 10 Single Language for my Windows 8.1 Single Language from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/techb...
Mounted it, ran the setup.exe, it crated the same $Windows.~WS folder and didnt proceed further. I check the taskmanager but now windows installer or setup.exe showed up in the process list. I check my windows installer service and its up and running. I went to safe mode and mounted the iso but result was the same.

    4. I burnt the ISO. Tried to boot from the dvd but DVD drive makes noise and then goes silent.
Infact after inserting the dvd in drive and after rebooting, my pc wont reboot untill the drive stops. Even when i press 'esc' to enter bios/uefi, it wont enter bios unless the dvd drive stops spinning or after i eject the dvd. Cannot access my my bios or access the boot order when i press f9 on my HP pavalion 15 notebook unless i eject the dvd from drive or unless the drive stops spinning

I have updated drivers, bios etc. All other bootable media works just fine but windows 10 bootable dvd gives problem.

    5. Downloaded fresh ISO, verified the md5 hash, everything looks good but dvd won boot and drive makes this cut cut cut noise.

I have my windows 8.1 up to date. Any insight as what might be the problem here?

I am going for the final option of having a bootable usb (when i buy one), untill then if anyone can suggest some steps i would be greatful. I was thinking to cancel the reservation as the update prompt from win 10 app is starting to annoy me. Can i cancel the reservation?

    Thanks.

Reading your post, I think you actually do not want the notifications to disappear, but you want to upgrade.

There are quite a number of people with that problem out there: https://www.google.com/search?q="windows+10"+installation+stuck+at+"preparing+for+installation"

For some the solution was as easy as just restarting the PC and installing the Windows 10 Upgrade again, others could solve it by using the Windows installation media creation tool.

These would be the two things I would try first. I am not sure, why this is not working for you.

Windows pretty surely creates installation log files. If you find those, it will be way easier to tell, what is actually going wrong!

    Hi Joergi,

I tried restarting my pc, after restarting my 2.8 GB download is deleted and i had to download it again. Yes, i did google for the preparing for installation error and followed all steps but none worked. I tried upgrading 4 times already. I am not sure whats going wrong. Running the media creation tool give me a UAC prompt and after clicking yes nothing happens. I check even viewer for windows logs for setup and there are not entry for it.

As of now i don't want to upgrade. I want to stop the notification from popping up and the gwx app from running on startup.

You don`t upgrade from bootable media, you upgrade from within windows.

If you don`t want the notifications, you have to uninstall all the Windows 10 updates, there are not that many. Then, when they appear again, you have to hide them or they will just keep appearing.

To completely remove the nagging Win10 upgrade notification, I've found that option #3 in the linked thread works best: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6...s-7-8-1-a.html

I have now checked my Windows installation, where the upgrade worked.

Inside the Windows folder there are three log files, which contain information about the upgrade process. These are:
    • setupact.log
    • DtcInstall.log
    • WindowsUpdate.log (this file gets appended each time a new update is installed or even only checked for; you will have to scroll a bit through this file until you get to the relevant information).

Apart from that, I found this list: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/928901 (Written for Windows Vista, but the process basically still is the same.) Note how it tells you which additional files you should have, when the upgrade -like in your case- failed. The last few lines in these files might be very interesting.

Maybe it helps, if you post the relevant parts of these logs here. I guess we should then at least be able to identify what the last and fatal error was in your case...

Just wondering what a $Windows.~WS folder is? I know what a $Windows.~BT folder is so what does the WS stand for?

Just a thought, if you have a Sony, they have informed users not to update till they have drivers available. I have a netbook that stops after the download and tells me "something happened" - such an understatement that gives little information ;-)
