Backup is always a waste of time till the day you need it. Then you're going to thank every minute you spent on it.

    Always regularly backup your data.

Sometimes it will get stuck at 77% for awhile.

Nothing you can do but wait.

with HDD it should take no longer than 40 min.
but that's only guess, and it depends on amount of existing data and possible issues during upgrade.
not only that, it also depends on the CPU speed and amount of RAM as well

took almost 1 hour & 15 minutes with a 500gb SATA II HDD and using an AMD Socket AM3 CPU [an AMD Phenom II X4 955 cpu] with 4Gb of DDR3 RAM on my custom built PC doing an in-place upgrade repair install and about 200gb of HDD space already filled up
