how long should a repair-install take?

I'm using Win10_2004_English_x64.iso I'm going to select "not right now" for including further updates during the repair, and only do the repair using the ISO my HDD.

I'm going to turn off my WIFI during the install so that Windows doesn't try to get anything else. Why? Because after the March forced update from 1909 to 2004, I can no longer install any more updates. I have already repaired several damaged files using DISM, but had to first download the ISO to do so. (DISM couldn't find a source for repairs online, on 1st attempts.) The Update Troubleshooter won't work for me. I cannot install any updates manually from the catalog. I tried to Cloud Reset to 2004. I got "There was a problem downloading. Unable to download. Please try Reset this PC using the local reinstall option."

So I'm going to do it all local only. However, with all my current problems, I'd like an idea of the duration so that I'll not be figuring that it has seized up.

    Thanks.

Allow maybe an hour, maybe less- and it depends how quickly you respond to any prompts.

There have been some cases on tenforums where an update of 2004 failed with an error number, and an in-place upgrade repair was the only solution found.

Note there are several ways of controlling Windows Update or taking control of it with free utilities- a topic discussed time and again. There's a tutorial on disabling automatic WU with such a tool as option 7.

with HDD it should take no longer than 40 min.
but that's only guess, and it depends on amount of existing data and possible issues during upgrade.

The '40 minute guess' above sounds pretty close if we're talking about the PC in your specs with the AMD Ryzen 5.

For System One in my specs below with it's much lower spec CPU it's usually at least double that.

I am going to join in on that. Absolutely. I see you are on 1903.

I was correct to fill that info in on my profile then. It wasn't a waste of time.

Wow, this is looking like a much MUCH better place than the official MS forums. Thanks everybody again.

The appropriate backup method (and recommended for routine use) is of course disk imaging- of all Windows O/S partitions. Just in case.

The amount of sub forums there probably exceeds total registered users lol, even if somebody knows the answer to random threads they may not have to time to click trough all those subsections. it's just too much.

After much research, and reformatting my USB HDD to NTFS, I did do a system image. I wish I had done so before the March update. Oh well: once burnt, twice shy. My motto is now that every update from MS might be the last time I can use this computer. Yep, maybe that's a little bit of over-exaggeration. Maybe...

Yep, it's a zoo there :) I spent an hour on my 1st post, and it was ignored.

People here are much more able, too.

No, it's never a waste of time - it helps us help you. You could usefully add the model number of your Lenovo (eg. IdeaPad L340 (17" AMD)). Some problems can be model-specific.
