    Can't update Windows from 1909

    Hello,
I can't update my old laptop. It didn't even update from 1909 to the May 2004 update (And it's already 20H2). I didn't care but now I get notifications all the time about end of support for 1909 and that I should update.

I guess some parts of my laptop (hardware/drivers?) aren't compatible. I tried to disable a few drivers but still nothing.

I tried to download the update assistant tool "Windows10Upgrade9252", but my laptop crashed and got stuck at 48% of the update, and then it restored

Any way to tell what is the issue?

    Thanks

@zbook - another one for you... good luck

Meanwhile, post full specs in an immediately readable list for this laptop (click My computers below my post - tutorials available if needed), advise about how old it is and post a link to its drivers page.

Also post a screenshot of its partitions using a 3rd party partition manager (not disk management).

Also run setupdiag.exe (free from MS) and post the result.

What security software are you using?

How much free space is there on C: ?

Please be aware that attempting to diagnose upgrade failures can be lengthy, tedious and iterative.

    Please run in sequence:

Tuneup.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

Update: I ran the assistant again and this time it worked.

I'm not sure that what I did is what fixed it, but my laptop has dual graphics, so I turned the second graphics card in BIOS and then updated again (It's funny because the second graphics card is almost the same performance as the Intel one.. lol I never used it)

    Similar Problem

    Hi all,

I have the same stuck at 1909 issue as @mibaup, albeit on a different machine - a Toshiba laptop [my System Two].

I've tried everything I know of (except a fresh install !!) to fix the problem, but always to no avail.

Can I "hijack" this thread for some help please? Or should I start a fresh one?

    Any help very gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks.

    In the meantime...

    Per @dalchina:-

    Here is screenshot of partitions

    Per @zbook...:-

I will execute TuneUp and Logs batch files in due course and post accordingly.

    And SetUpDiag Log is below

Hi, first, uninstall 3rd party AV- Comodo in your case.
Second, I think your partitions may be problematic. There's no space to create a larger Recovery partition- if that indeed is what your 3rd partition is. I can't tell for sure- normally we ask for a 3rd party partition manager screenshot.

    Please advise:
Have you been offered an upgrade by Windows Update?
Have you seen any message e.g. indicating your machine isn't ready for it yet?
What exactly do you see happen- what error message do you get?

Your laptop is rather old and thus may or may not be compatible with any given upgrade.
    Toshiba [Dynabook] C660-155 - from around 2011.

Does it have a functional drivers download page? I couldn't find one with a quick search. Please post a link.
What O/S did it come with originally?

How have you attempted the upgrade?
    - using an iso file
    - via Windows Update
    - other

As ever, before making any major change, and in case something goes badly wrong, create a disk image as is endlessly recommended here - eg.. Macrium Reflect (free) + external drive for image files- of all O/S partitions.

    The rest is with @zbook.

As such threads can be long and arduous, you will probably be asked to create your own as it's impossible to manage 2 such cases in the same thread.
    Good luck.

    Hi @dalchina,

Thanks very much for your post - let me try and answer some of your queries.

    # Not sure what you mean by a 3rd party partition manager; the one I provided is from MiniTool Partition Wizard 12 and as displayed is showing:

    - The original Win 7 Recovery Partition ~400MB
    - The primary boot partition, originally Win 7 now Win 10 ~232GB
    - A second Recovery Partition (i.e. C: drive) created when I upgraded Win 7 to Win 10 ~669MB
    - A fourth, general purpose partion (D: drive) as original provided from new, and which I use for storing of odds and sods e.g. photos, MP3s, videos etc ~232GB.

    # I manually updated to Win 10 @Jan 2020, then @ Aug 2020 was offered the Feature Update 2004. However despite numerous attempts to execute itself, over 2-3 weeks, it always failed and I've been left with the offer still showing ever since, although never relaunching itself again since, nor providing a manual option to do so. I dont remember any specific error messages nor anything along the lines of "your machine is not ready/supported yet".

    # I have tried several methods very recently to upgrade manually (the current on offer being 20H2):
    - The Update Assistant; failed with a popular 0x8 code - dont remember which one now.
    - The Media Creation Tool to create USB updater; fails @ 55% in the blue "Installing Windows 10" - I might have a crash dump still of the last one of those.
    - Media Creation Tool to "Update This PC Now"; takes longer than above USB method but with similar looking fail at similar progress point - I might have a crash dump still of that.

    # Before any of the above I also executed the Update Reset Process provided by member @Brink, but although it seemed to work as expected I still get no new updates offered via Check For Updates (although I still seem to be receiving Security updates - last one was KB50000808 @ 11 March).

Interesting comments about Comodo and two Recovery Partitions. I know Comodo can be awkward but I'm always nervous about spending time online with AV disabled - and the installer spends ages "getting ready" and downloading "updates". So can I trust Defender for protection in the interim?

As for the 2 Rec Parts - I'm wondering about those as well now. I suppose I could delete one/both of them - they dont seem to have a lot of value?...
