IMHO it is a little too early to come to the conclusion that the M2 drive be it SATA or PCIe interface, has failed
You stated it only had 4GB of free space.
That with the possible corruption of the file system could be the reason that - delete - may not work
Or indeed as my colleague says - diskpart - from where.

It maybe that the drive has been placed in read only mode due to the severe lack of free space
This is only a possibility, when there is more or less no free space left, the firmware in the drive MAY I understand cause the drive to be placed in read-only mode.
I have read that a Linux Gparted will delete the partitions, but I cannot assure you it will, as I have never dealt personally with a SSD in read only mode.

    You could try diskpart
    1. diskpart
    2. list disk
    3. select disk * (the number allocated to the M2)
    4. detail disk
That will tell you if the disk is read only - or should do if the attributes can be read
    As here
    DISKPART> list disk

Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt
    -------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---
    All other disk info deleted
example of diskpart for disk 3
    Disk 3 Online 232 GB 0 B
    DISKPART> select disk 3
Disk 3 is now the selected disk.
    DISKPART> detail disk

    Maxtor OneTouch USB Device
    Disk ID: 004282EA
    Type : USB
    Status : Online
    Path : 0
    Target : 0
    LUN ID : 0
    Location Path : UNAVAILABLE
    Current Read-only State : No
    Read-only : No

    Boot Disk : No
    Pagefile Disk : No
    Hibernation File Disk : No
    Crashdump Disk : No
    Clustered Disk : No

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
    ---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 9 M Maxtor NTFS Partition 232 GB Healthy

    DISKPART>
    =========================================================
If it is read only you COULD try
At diskpart in the cmd prompt from the windows 10 installation usb
    try
    2. Type diskpart and press Enter.

    3. Type list disk and press Enter.

    4. Type select disk #(ex: Disk 1) to select the disk which is write protected and press Enter.

    5. Type attributes disk clear readonly to change the disk’s properties so that it is no longer read-only and press Enter.

    Thanks, Megahertz.

In the BIOS under NVMe controller and drive information

It says No NVME Device. Found

I checked this on an identical computer to the one with the failed hard drive.

Should I replace the hard drive with a SATA or NVME?

    Many thanks for your help.

    - - - Updated - - -

The board has American Megatrends Aptio Setup Facility

There is a section for NVME Configuration

In that section, It says No NVME Device Found.

I have 2 identical units and I am checking the bios on the working unit.

Does this suggest that the drive fitted is SATA but it will take an NVME?

    Many thanks.
