Back when I first installed Win 10 (May 2020), I had installed Acronis.
Then I discovered Macrium Reflect, so I tried to uninstall Acronis, with THEIR removal tool.

NOTHING I could do or find to do, could completely get rid of Acronis.
My solution was to just re-install Windows 10, and never even TYPE the word Acronis on my computer... ever again.

This is why I recommend a clean install. I know it's harder... but it has the advantage of completely removing Acronis.

External, not internal. Did I miss something?
I'm not sure. We may be misunderstanding each other.

I have a bunch of internal drives:

SSD1 => Windows 7 that I had been using all along
SSD2 => Newly-installed larger SSD, Clone of SSD1 (cloned with Samsung Data Migration), the one I'm currently booted to and trying to upgrade to Win 10
    And various other data drives

External drives are OUTSIDE the computer.
They are in their own enclosure and usually run on a USB cable and a power brick.

These are some examples of Western Digital and Samsung, external drives...

    Choose External Storage - PCPartPicker

Here is a pic of a fairly common one...

ok, I see. I'll re-word..... if you can easily disconnect without opening the case, that's an external that can be unplugged.

The Win 10 Installer is recognizing whatever it has found as being some part of Acronis True Image. Perhaps it is something using the 32-digit product code the Microsoft Fixit tool was requesting. If there was a way to find out that product code, perhaps I could find the root of the problem.

And yes, I realize at this point it's easier to do a clean install - but what fun is that when we've come this far?

The "fun" part is having a brand spanking new install of Windows 10, w/o dragging along all the crud that's collected over the years in Windows 7.

Haha - certainly I've not come across as that much of a novice user, have I? To throw a wrench into your explanation, my new SSD is currently in a hot-swappable external SATA dock in my PC case. So it's an internal drive mounted externally

If I have to rule out the installer looking at the second drive, I'll boot off the internal and pop out the docked drive, but I'll be stunned if this is at the root of things. If it was looking over all my drives, it would have found way more nefarious crap to complain about!

    LOL.

Hot swap drives don't count as external drives.

    Nice case though. ^^
