    after install, monitor shuts off

I went to upgrade my wife's computer from win 7 to win 10. It completed the install and when it got to the circling dots and saying getting ready, the monitor shuts off. I can't get past that. I took the HDD out of my desktop and put hers in and formatted her drive and installed win 10 in it. I then put her drive back into hers and tried to boot it up. it got to the circling dot again and the monitor shut off. the computer didn't shut down, but it won't go anywhere after the monitor shuts off. Any suggestions?? It worked fine with win 7 in it. It is win 10 and it updates to win 10 version 2004.

Hello twoqts and welcome to TF ,

Give this a try and let me know what happens.

Also try booting from the Windows Repair USB and try the repair option.

Check the PC website for BIOS version updates vs what's currently installed. Updating drivers including the video driver would have been a good idea before updating - for next time.

I did everything in your video, when i clicked on display driver and right clicked it it didn't give me the option to uninstall the driver, just the display. i also uninstalled the monitor. i rebooted and it came to the same place where it tries to load but quits at the monitor going black. i can't update the bios without getting into the computer. i don't know the name of the video card for the driver. i was able to get into safe mode. and when i had the hdd in my other computer, the monitor worked just fine. not understanding why it will work in one but not the other.

If you can boot to safe mode, bring up the Device Manager and you can get the video card information from their.

Can't update the BIOS from safe mode?

If you installed Windows when the HDD was in your PC, it probably doesn't have the drivers required for her PC.

If you can boot her PC to safe mode with networking enabled, you might search for the correct video drivers, etc and install them that way from safe mode.

I've switched out hard drives b4 in one then put it in the other. it will boot up to the desktop and then install the drivers for everything from there. I tried 2 different win 10 cd's and they get to getting services and the monitor shuts off. I don't know where to go from here. might just try another motherboard and a add on video card instead of the one on the board. I can't see why it hangs. can't figure out why it boots in the one computer but not the other. not sure if i need an add on card, another harddrive(but it worked win windows 7 til I tried to upgrade.

Did you try to update the BIOS in safe mode?
In safe mode, open device manager. What is the GPU brand?

Try swapping the monitors to see if one is faulty,.
If so ,then swap power and monitor leads ,one at a time to see if they are at fault.
The bios POST checks availability, not suitabilty, the operating system does that.

I have a possible solution. When I upgraded from Win7 to Win10 and even sometimes upgrading from 1909 to 2004 and now to 21H1 I had to do this. Its weird but it worked. After you you start your computer up yes you get the usual loading screen then mine got to the logon screen and right after that my screen would go Black and i had no cursor nothing..I found this crazy fix on some site. Once your screen goes black, press the WIN key + P at the same time quickly and release immediately, then tap arrow up twice, arrow down twice and arrow left Once, then hit enter and your screen should come back on, try a few times doing that and possibly hit the Esc button after Enter you should get your screen and cursor back and it should boot fully to your desktop, then restart your computer again and you shouldnt have any issues after that. This worked for me but maybe you have a different problem, just thought I would see if it would work for you.
