System upgraded now every screen background is black

A day or two back, my system had an upgrade to perform when I turned it on. Now every program's background is black with very harsh colours and highlighting - takes me back to PCDos days - per attached. Previously, Windows and all programs just used the default appearances.

Is there an easy way of getting back to those calmer screens?

At a guess, you have a High Contrast Black theme turned on. That normally wouldn't happen with an update.

Right click on the desktop, select Personalize. In the upper right of the settings screen click on "high contrast settings". Turn it off in the screen that opens.

Thanks, bobkn. That did the trick. Why it changes is a mystery. I turned the PC on, say the usual background picture. Then it loaded in the upgrade and the screen was black as spades.
