Windows 10 Quality Update failure since 1803

My bottomline issue is that Windows 10 'quality' updates have been failing to complete since 1803. Feature updates complete successfully. Message received is currently "2020-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4537762) (92) Last failed install attempt on 2/13/2021 - 0x800f0922"

I have viewed and tried many of the proposed fixes, both from this forum and from various YouTube creators - including most recently a "repair update" from the latest Windows 10 ISO, in an effort to get Windows 10 up to date while retaining my existing files and programs. Each of these attempts has ended after (15-20 hours of runtime) with a black screen of death and despite all my efforts have required that I back out the latest updates and revert to version 1803.

I am on the verge of trying a "clean install" of Windows but anticipate that will result in me losing my currently installed programs.

Several questions: Has anyone experienced this type of update failure and know of a workaround? Is a clean install a viable option - in particular, is there any practical way to preserve my existing program collection?

    Machine is a Lenovo 4389BB4 W510 i7 with 12G ram and a 250G SSD. Windows 10 Pro (x64) (build 17134.1006) version 1803

    Thank you. Art

Hi, have you seen this one?
Fix: Windows Update Error code: 0x800f0922

2019-01 cumulative update for 1809 x64 fails with 0x800F0922 error

The App Readiness Service was disabled, once it was set to Automatic again BANG - all machines took the updates.
    Otherwise:
You can try running setupdiag.exe, free from MS

    Inspect the WU logs:
Read Windows Update Logs in Windows 10

Download the iso file, perform clean boot, run through
Reset Windows Update in Windows 10

    Then reattempt the update.

in particular, is there any practical way to preserve my existing program collection?
Yes, using a 1-off license for such programs as
    Easeus Todo PCtrans, Laplink PcMover
    - using a disk image of your existing Windows as source is the most convenient way to transfer to a clean install.

    Steps...

Thanks for your suggestions Dalchina! Started with startupdiag.exe which logged the following - which appears to be related to my "Repair Update" attempt which seems to indicates that the update was successful, but results in a boot failure. I am continuing with your other guidance.

Dalchina - Created/viewed Windows update log and there are so many entries I am reluctant to waste your time by sending all...but...(perhaps in my ignorance) did not see any entries indicating a boot failure or other associated event. Continuing...

Thanks. Do note the item in bold I found first... what's the state of that service?

Granted, log files are rarely helpful- therein lies the difficulty. Sometimes you can find a clue by researching particular failure reports in them.

I can see that your BIOS is very outdated.
Your BIOS is 1.38 and last BIOS is 1.45
It gives support to Win 8Update your BIOS to 1.45

Dalchina - found services.msc was not started - so started and set to automatic. Boot did not seem to complete a Windows 10 update but see a message that W10 update was "still downloading" (my paraphrase) so I'm trying another update. Will also nex follow up on suggestions from Megahertz, book, and Samuria. Amazed at all of your responsiveness on this - wish I had asked earlier! Thank you. Continuing...

Dalchina - latest update attempt yielded:

    Update History
    Quality Updates (2)
    2020-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x-64-based Systems (KB4537762)
    Failed to install on 2/14/2021 - 0x800f0922

    2021-02 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x-64-based Systems (KB4023057)
    Successfully installed on 2/14/2021

    winver still shows 1803

Will next attempt BIOS update from current 1.38 to 1.45 and report, start a Windows 10 update, and report results.

    2021-02 Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x-64-based Systems (KB4023057)
    Successfully installed on 2/14/2021

You might want to try Windows Updates again. KB4023057 is an update to the Windows Updater.
In other words, your windows updater may now be fixed.

If it still doesn't work, just do an In-Place Upgrade.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Megahertz - I am nervous/reluctant to update the BIOS (with all due respect) - not at all confident I'd be able to recover if I bungle it!

That being said, I plan to proceed with steps recommended by zbook and will post results.

ghot - thanks for your recommendations on an update - I have been down that trail based on YouTuber britec09 suggestions and unfortunately the end result (after a 15-hour update) was a machine that booted clean up through the Windows login - where it went to BSOD (black) and left me with no other obvious choice but to back out the updates and continue with 1803.
