Dell XPS 8900 will not boot from new SSD: "No boot device found".

    Dear forum,

There seem to be some real experts in this group and I'd be grateful for your advice here.

I've installed a new 500 GB Kingston SSD and cloned my existing HDD to it. Both drives show in the drive list, and appear to have the same files on them. I was intending to leave the old drive in for storage.

I had to enable Legacy Boot in the BIOS to set the new SSD to the top of the boot list. However, the machine will not now boot up.

What do I need to do here?

With thanks for any advice you may have.

    (I'm using Windows 10 Pro)

If your cloned drive is a GPT disk, make sure the UEFI boot mode is enabled, and if it is an MBR disk, then set it to Legacy boot mode.

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below commands into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following commands will repair Master Boot Record (MBR), Boot Sector and BCD Store.

    Code:
    Bootrec /FixMbr

    Bootrec /FixBoot

    Bootrec /scanos

    Bootrec /RebuildBcd

I don't know whether it is GPT.
I cloned the new SSD with Acronis True Image supplied with it, and didn't have to make a choice.
By changing back to Secure Boot and disabling Legacy mode, the machine boots up again O.K. But I assume this is from the old HDD?

Leave the BIOS settings as it was before cloning.
Try to detach the old drive from the MB (SATA or power cable) and boot.

I have detached the power cable.
Got past the DELL logo on reboot but the circle of dots is circling, without getting any further.

    Leave the original drive detached.

Boot from a Win 10 installation drive and do a boot repair.

Everyday there are posts similar to yours. It’s important to understand that when you CLONE a disk it creates a disk with the same disk signature as the original. When you attempt to boot with two disks with the same signature it doesn’t work. The old disk must have the power or data cables unhooked before you reboot. That is at the heart of what you experienced. Cloning is fine if you understand this but a safer process is to use disk imaging. This does not copy the disk signature and will avoid this problem. Sound like you’re getting good help from the other members fixing the problem. Carry on.

I have a recovery drive I made earlier, but it doesn't seem to boot from that?

Depressing certainly to have these problems. I'm no hardware expert. The instructions from the supplier provided a "version B" specifically for installing the SSD while keeping the original drive, as I intended. They simply instruct one to connect the new drive and clone it; no instruction to disconnect the existing one.

No. I can't find how to do it.
I have a recovery drive but nothing is getting me into windows from that.
Ah! Troubleshoot-Advanced Options-Comand_prompt gives the command prompt.
    Working on it..

    It looks like this:

    >Bootrec /FixMbr
    The operation completed successfully

    >BootRec /FixBoot
    Access is denied

    >BootRec /scanos
... Total identified windows installations: 0
    The operation completed successfully

    >Bootrec /RebuildBcd
    ...Total identified windows installations: 0
    The operation completed successfully
