Updating from Windows 1803 to 20H2

    Hi all:

I've got a Toshiba laptop that has been sitting for years because it had become un-useable due to extreme slow performance. Last update was October 2018 - Version 1803. Decided to try to revive it this week. It's working fine now but won't update to 202H. It doesn't crash, it doesn't update.. it seems to be caught in a loop.

I've done some research and I'm guessing it won't update because of the lapse between updates? Do I need to use the ISO or USB Recovery drive now to update this Windows 10 computer to the latest version?

I tried Update Assistant and that failed too..

Thank you. Here are the specs:

    Toshiba Satellite C875
    Intel Core i3-3110M 2.4 GHz
    4GB Ram
    64 Bit x64 Processor

    Windows 10 Home
    Version 1803

    Hi, basic points:
    - the laptop is from around 2013, it seems. I can't find a drivers page for it. There is no guarantee of ongoing compatibility and all upgrades are entirely at your risk.
    - diagnosing upgrade failure is next to impossible even if you upload the upgrade logs. Almost no one here is willing to attempt this- threads go on for days to 100s of posts.

Have you been offered a Win 10 upgrade on this laptop? Is Windows Update actually working? Is that what you've tried?
If you have NOT been offered an upgrade that tells you something.

To upgrade you need at least 30Gb free on C:

Make sure you have the latest BIOS.

Check your disk e.g. Crystal Diskinfo.
    If ok, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    from an admin command prompt.

    If ok, similarly run
    SFC /SCANNOW

Idea: try a trial clean install of 20H2- put in a spare disk. See if 20H2 will actually run on it.
You could try searching to see if anyone has run 20H2 on it successfully.

    Try running
    Setupdiag.exe
Google- free from MS. Post the result.

Post a screenshot of your partitions using a 3rd party partition manager (not Disk Management).

Disable or remove any 3rd party security software.

My wife's C655 is working fine with Version 2009/20H2 but I have experienced where a client's different brand running Version 1803 worked better by going to 1903 first then to 2004 after which it was offered 2009/20H2.

Download and run the media creation tool inside windows, and see what it says. You should be offered an option to keep all your folders, it shows up later in the process.

    example
Use the Microsoft media creation tool to force the Windows 10 Anniversary Update today | Windows Central

I have done some upgrades using media creation tool, but not from that far back in version numbers.
I have one PC I forced to remain on 1909, cause frankly I dont care to go through reinstalling WMC 10 etc...setup all that stuff unless forced to. Like take a whole day of trials to get it all back to functioning.

We use it as a media center PC. It does fine as it is, good Dolby 5.1 and all. But at some point the MS support runs out, but since I dont allow updates on it. why would it matter anyway. It might watch youtube, but very little web use. We use a 4k firestick for everything except recording local TV channels OTA.

    Hey just a quick update:

I used Setupdiag.exe (thank you @dalchina) and it found a failed attempt at creating a Username Profile. I cleaned those out (I had several from trying to get the Microsoft Account recognized). I deleted the files in Windows\Users but the Setupdiag still found the error, so...

I ran DISM and then SFC and took care of that. I seem to have a clean bill of health.

    I didn't run scandisk, but I don't think I have a disk problem.
Also don't have any third-party disk management utilities. I'm assuming all my partitions are good.

Feeling (somewhat) confident, I am currently using Windows Upgrade Assistant to update the system. So far, no errors.

It got through the "Checking for Updates" stage and I restarted.. now says "Working on updates" and I'm at 12%.

If this doesn't work, I'll probably try a clean install from the ISO or USB Recovery Disk.

Thank you all for your help, especially @dalchina.

    glad you got it.
If you use the media creation tool method, it puts a fresh copy of windows 10 on, installs windows 10, and keeps you files and settings.
An update upgrade to the next version through windows update, may not do the same thing. That is what I think happens.

    Lucky this time...

(Always worth keeping an eye on your disks. I had a 1Tb disk recently that I imaged a month ago, could read everything I tried, failed when being imaged.

Crystal Diskinfo reported weak and bad sectors, similarly Hard Disk Sentinel.

Crystal Diskinfo (free) can be set to automatically alert you of disk degradation against thresholds.
Routine disk imaging (so often recommended here) gives you a chance to recover when things go pear-shaped. E.g. Macrium Reflect - free/paid)
