Win 10 & Linux - which is best to install first on new SSD?

    Hi folks

Title of post says it all really.

Trying to breathe new life into a 12 y.o. laptop (just. don't. ask. okay?)

Got a brand-new Crucial MX500 SSD to this end (which I can use elsehere if needs be).

Which is best to install first - Windows 10 then Linux Mint or Mint first and then Windows??

    Thanks in anticipation.

    All the best for 2021

Sorry to be a bit slow here ...

You installed Win 10, then Linux (Ubuntu)?

I don't recognise 'Root Debug' but '20H2' is the latest version of Win 10 which I DO recognise.

When installing Linux it asked if you wanted to use unused space and how much?

    Cheers

I am playing with multiple Operating system, that why, then forget about others partitions

Install windows first (20H2) and leave 20GB or more un-allocated (a quick way is to do it manually during windows setup)
If windows is already installed and take all space, you can shrink windows partition within windows itself
then install Linux in this un-allocated space

the double boot will be stored in the EFI partition

Dual boot is completely different on a Legacy and on a UEFI computer.

As it is a 12 YO laptop it probably don't have a UEFI BIOS so the UEFI option cant be used.
On a Legacy - MBR computer, BIOS transfer the boot sequence to the MBR of a Drive, that points to a Boot loader. This boot loader can transfer the boot sequence to a OS or to another boot loader.
As Linux boot loader (Grub) automatically search for a windows boot loader, I would install Windows first and then Linux Mint.
During Windows installation make 2 partitions, a big one for Windows and a second (~35G) for Linux. Install windows on the first partition (windows will sub create more partitions).
You will probably end with this partitions:
    System partition
    MS reserved
    Windows
    Recover
    Linux
    Swap

Probably good advice Megahertz to make 2 partitions whan installing Windows but I've already installed Win 10 (and updated to 20H2) and then put Linux in a 75GB partition - leaving Windows 325Gb of the 400Gb available on the 500GB SSD.

I resized the partitions when putting Linux on.

Just need to add a third partition to put Macrium Rescue in.

    Happy New Year!

I would, but I can't fathom how to do it!

I thought there was a button / link somewhere but can't see one.

    Okay - figured it out
