No, you can't. You can however upgrade Vista to Windows 7 keeping installed files and apps, and from there you could upgrade to Windows 10. In order to upgrade from W7 to W10 the W7 has to be activated, so you'd need a legitimate W7 key. The activated W7 would then entitle you to an activated W10.

In fact, you can upgrade XP to Vista, and I have done the whole round trip from XP to W10 in a VM to retain use of some licenced software installed on an old XP machine of mine. The PC died long ago, but I still had the HDD and restored a Macrium image of it to a VM.

Was just looking at the box for Family Pack version of Win7 Upgrade Home Premium [for 3 computers] and WinXP will require a clean install [probably because only WinXP Pro could be had as x64]. Vista could be x86 or x64. WinXP and Vista qualify for using the Upgrade and the package includes both x86 and x64 versions.

Thanks for the links Ignatzatsonic, I will check them out.

Mergahertz, thanks for your reply. You are right that 2Gbt on an old machine running Win 10 will hit performance. Anyway I can test Win 32 bit before I purchase the licence. One of the laptops belongs to a friend who needs Win 10 to run some programmes that will not run on Vista or Linux. I am only interested in using a genuine licence.

Thanks for the suggestion Bree to use Win 7 as a stepping stone from Vista to Win 10.

Berton, where did you see the 3 Family Pack version of Win7 Upgrade Home Premium? I wonder if they can ship to Europe?

Zbook, thanks for the link. I will check it out.

Thank you all for your comments.

    Kind regards

Thank you FreeBooter and Dalchina for your advice. I agree it would be a good idea to test Win 10 before buying a licence. I think it will run.

Does anyone know where to find the legitimate offer for Win 10 offer for under $40?

    Kind regards
    Chris

For any license ask if there is or is not a temporary activation requiring a renewal or whether it's a permanent activton.

Well, that's what I paid MS for my Win 8.1 Pro license (when Win 8 was unpopular) - which is now Win 10 of course on a different PC..
