Cannot upgrade Windows 8.x to Windows 10 (Setup won't start in laptop)

    Hello,

Guys i've been hitting my head since last night and i am not understanding, why i cannot run the windows upgrade setup from my USB (G:\setup.exe). It is always showing me this error "Use the other installation disc that says 64-bit. When you insert it, Windows Setup will restart automatically."

I also heard that for many people it worked when they run windows setup from "G:\sources\setup.exe" (G: is my USB drive). But when i am trying to open the file it shows Shows setup screen for a few seconds then pops an error "This 32-bit version of Windows cannot be installed to an EFI-based computer. Installation cannot proceed. Use a 64-bit version of Windows to install to an EFI-based computer."

I am trying to run this setup on my HP laptop (Preinstalled: Windows 8 Single Language 64bit) via bootable USB of Windows 10 Home Single Language. I download the Windows10.iso image file via MediaCreationToolx64.exe and created a Media USB disk to install the operating system on the same laptop.

Bootable USB is running setup if i boot my laptop with USB disk. But it will force me to install a fresh Windows 10, which i don't want to. I want to upgrade my current Windows 8.x.

I am sure that i've downloaded correct 64bit version of Windows even i have Windows 10 AIO 32bit/64bit ISO image. Same errors showing in this ISO image too. If i run the "G:\sources\setup.exe" in my PC (which is running Windows 8 64bit) then it runs the process without showing me any error. Why it is happening with laptops only? I also tried to run setup from same USB in my another Lenovo Laptop (which is currently running Windows 8.1 Single language 64bit) but no luck it shows the same both errors.

    Please help me up!
Sorry about my bad English as i am not a native English Speaker!

Problem is solved. I would suggest my friends to "not" use MediaCreationTool for Windows 10 .iso downloading.

Instead of using that stupid tool. Please use this link: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/techbench (Link suggested by @Crashbash111)

Where did you download the ISO ? from here Windows 10 Download ?
Comparing yours and mine, there's a difference in file size of bootmgr.efi

This MediaCreationToolx64.exe downloaded an .iso file for me. I downloaded this exe file from here :

Depending on what you want, you can use the MediaCreation tool in 2 ways:

    - create a startable USB drive
    - upgrade your existing computer

When creating the USB drive you will be asked which version(s) you would like to download
Make sure to choose "Both" (32 and 64)

Because of the extreme high volume of data being transferred over the last 2-3 weeks, downloading the image file does not always work well. Just use the MediaCreation tool again if the first image failed

    Good luck

@Harpet, mate i tried to download the .iso from that tool twice. Even i have an ISO image of Windows 10 All in One 32/64bit, which is working fine in Virtual Machine on one of my laptop. But when i am trying to run the setup inside window from any of these .iso files in my laptop1 or laptop2. I get the same error "This 32-bit version of Windows cannot be installed to an EFI-based computer. Installation cannot proceed. Use a 64-bit version of Windows to install to an EFI-based computer."

Strange thing is, if i use the same .iso images on my Desktop Computer then setup runs without any problem. I am sure that it will work on laptop if i start windows setup by booting via USB disk. But it will force me to install a fresh copy, instead of upgrading. I tried to upgrade via Booting with USB disk but it says i need to remove Windows Installation Media Disk and boot the computer with my already installed windows (windows8) and run the setup from there using "setup.exe" file.

I am stucked with this thing. Even if i use "Upgrade this PC" option from MediaCreationTool. I cannot think of any guarantee that the setup will launch after download complete. Because my laptops assuming the setup is 32bit. I can assure that i downloaded 64bit versions

Not sure why that could have happened. I've actually come across that issue before while using the tool Microsoft provides. An easy fix for me was downloading official ISO files directly from Microsoft. You can bypass the USB Download tool and download ISO files directly from the Microsoft site though it isn't easy to find the link to the page that lets you do so.

Here is the link to a page where you can download ISOs instead on the Microsoft website. The download URLs expire 24 hours after they are generated though, so be sure to download them within that time.

Let me know if it helps! :)

@Crashbash111, bud i will try that new link too. It seems like that's something different. But can you tell me or attach a screenshot of list of files that a 64bit windows 10 image contains? Maybe a list of files from isoimage / efi / boot / too? I can see only bootia32.efi in this folder.

    Thanks!

I also created a file tree of all the contents of the disk file and saved it in a notepad document. You can view that here

    32-bit

    \efi\boot\bootia32.efi

    64-bit

    \efi\boot\bootx64.efi
