Moving data from W7 laptop to W10 laptop

My wife is still using a Windows 7 laptop. She resists change. It's hdd is divided into a C: W7 system partition and an E: data partition.

She is now getting a Windows 10 laptop and I need to move her data and installed programs (mostly MS office 2002, Thunderbird set up as POP with years of old emails, etc) from the old laptop to the new one.

What's the best way for me to do this?

I do have imaging backup software and an external HDD. But is there a better and easier way?

    Thanks.

Hi first off you will need to install programs can’t just move installed programs plus you can’t image win 7 and put image on the win 10 machine.

A tip about Installed programs: the issue with them is that when installed the files are copied to either C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) [for older 32-bit], Registry entries are created so Windows knows how to run them, icons are put in their proper place and support files are copied to Windows. Moving a program can be possible but one would have first copy from the old computer with it running and pasted into the same place on the new one. When trying to run a program there will be errors about not find particular files which then have to be copied from the old and pasted in the same place in the new and icons/shortcuts pasted/created. The process can require dedicating numerous hours to do it. Registry entries are something else and one misstep can kill the operation of Windows.

Unfortunately that's what I thought. I thought I recalled there were programs that did it for you, but I guess not.
    Thanks

Thunderbird is simple use MozBackup - Backup tool for Firefox and Thunderbird
How much data are we talking about and what sort of data?
If there isnt to much data install Google backup and sync pick the data on old pc and setup Google on new pc its not fast but it will synce 7-10 and upload to cloud its very simple to do you store photos on Google for free and have 15 gig space for other files it means you have a backup off site

There was one and still is called LapLink. I haven't needed it in several years so have no recommendation one way or another. Last one I saw came on a CD and included a flat Ethernet cable, it was either a straight-through or cross-over used to connect one computer directly to the other. The cable I have that came the CD is still sealed in the package, could locate my cable tester to find out tomorrow [I make cables as needed, harder to do now with the neuropathy in my fingers].

    Laplink PC Mover -

    PCmover Professional – Laplink(R)

The other option would be to image the Windows 7 drive, and the new Windows 10 drive.

Restore the Windows 7 image on the new computer, and then upgrade it to Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool.

That would also get rid of any computer manufacturer bloat that got installed before it left the factory.

There are programs, drivers, etc. that cannot work in Windows 7 and 10.

Consider a trial run of Windows 10.
    And consider an upgrade.

I would make a backup image of the Windows 7. Then upgrade the Windows 7 to Windows 10 on the old computer. If it upgrades successfully, it will be much easier to move a Windows 10 installation between computers. The two big gotcha's for moving Windows 10 between computers is UEFI v. Legacy BIOS (old computer is probably Legacy BIOS and new computer is probably UEFI). Also SATA drive controller mode, if the old one is IDE, and the new one is probably AHCI. Both of those differences are pretty easy to overcome, though.
