Updating to 20H2 - my experience

I waited until now for the Windows Update to 20H2. Since nothing appeared so far, I decided to do it anyway. I chose to use the Windows 10 Update Assistant. I took the precaution of having made in image backup and also disabling all my third party antivirus and malware software.

The Windows 10 Update Assistant was installed and after it checked my system and found it alright for an update from v.2004 it proceeded to install 20H2. The process was quite long as I found. It took almost one hour, but the follow up tasks lengthened the time to about two and a half hours.

The update must have done an -in place upgrade because I saw that it ended with a Windows.old directory. Also when I logged in to each of my three accounts on this laptop I was greeted with a "Hi" message, updates were automatically made - you know the "we've got some updates for your PC..." procedure took place. I don't know why this is necessary for each account on the laptop.

There was a problem on startup with an error about "Bridge.Server.exe" not found, but I solved it by resetting Cortana.
Also "a problem was encountered" and my default programs fro PDF and HTML files were reset by Windows. This however must have been temporary, because I saw it on my Local Administrator account. When I logged in to my standard user account the previous defaults applied as they also applied after I logged back in to the Local Administrator account.

There were updates for the .NET Framework and a Cumulative Update preview (KB4580364) which probably replaced the ones that were installed for v.2004 earlier.

I was surprised to find out that the Media Creation Tool which I used later to create a Windows installation disk (DVD) did not warn me from the start that there would not be enough space to do so. I resorted to creating the installation media on a USB disk.

Overall the experience for me was long with a few surprises, but no serious problems. All in all I would have preferred to have done it the way others already did, through Windows Update.

Odd that you had some issues, I also used the update assistant from within 2004.
The process took about 20 mins, left a Windows.old, but everything else was fine when I got to the desktop, I checked Windows old and there was nothing to keep there, just old Windows files. To be honest I'm not even sure why a Windows.old was needed, there was no Users folder structure at all.
No missing associations, no "Hi" message, but I only have the one account and I have Windows Pro with almost everything left at default settings, last reboot went through auto login, straight to desktop.

I have no explanation. It's not as if i was given any options during the update procedure. It ran automatically from the beginning to the end. Also no third party antivirus or malware software was active during that time.

@Pejole2165 You always get a windows.old when you update to a new W10 version, although 20H2 is a very light Feature update

@Fortitude You can download and run Windows Automatic Update Manager if you want. It turns off Windows Update so you can check for updates yourself.

Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

    Option 7

I noticed today I was offered 20H2 on the Z170

@AddRAM the Windows Automatic Update Manager is quite impressive in what it can do. I wish I had it just after the 20H2 was released. It would have saved me a lot of effort and some time which I spent when manually checking for Windows Updates.

Direct link for 20H2, if windows update is not offering it to you
I have 5 PC's, one was not being offered this update after I updated to 2004, I did this and it has been fine

My device was not impacted, so the rollout is deliberately slowed in case problems happen all at once, limits the damage, is my thinking for why MS update does this.

I have a lot of troubling remembering '20H2', I keep mixing up letters, numbers, order of chars on that string.
