Is upate to Windows 10, version 2004 genuine?

    Hi,
my wife is running Windows 10 Pro version 1903 build 18362.1139 on her PC. This evening when she switched on the computer a popup said to upgrade to the latest Windows 10. I did not want to do anything until I had checked if it was a genuine popup or a spoof.

    Thanks,
    Gerald

2004 is the previous May upgrade release. 20H2 is the current October upgrade starting to be phased into the upgrade channel.

    So yes, 2004 is legit.

I would strongly urge you to do an image backup of the hard drive before doing the upgrade.

The first thing you need to do is backup your current install. The best way to do this is to use Macrium Reflect Free to make an image backup to an external hard drive. If you don't have an external hard drive now is a good time to get one as regular backup should be a part of your normal process. You can get a 1TB external hard drive for $60 (less if on sale).

There are other backup programs available but Macrium is the one I use and recommend.

This is something you should be doing on a regular basis as part of your normal system maintenance for both you and your wife.

Once that's done go ahead and upgrade. If things go wrong, recovery if 20-30 minutes away by simply restoring the backup image.

    Many thanks,
I'll do it tomorrow when I have more time. My PC is left on all the time, I'll have a go after I've done hers.
