Update to v2004 Fails - 2nd Boot - System Thread Exception Not Handled

I have made 4 attempts to upgrade a laptop from Windows 10 v1909 to v2004.

This is an Asus A53SD-TS71 (K53SD Series)
    Running most current BIOS (208)
    Core 17-2670QM
    8GB RAM
    Nvidia 610M

    1st Attempt through Windows Update
2nd Attempt through Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant
3rd Attempt through Media Creation Tool ISO on USB (after updating all drivers)
4th attempt through Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant (after freeing up hard disk space > 20GB free)

Stop Code: "System Thread Exception Not Handled" - 0xC1900101

I have gone through the device manager and updated each driver one by one
Ran SFC and DISM. No issues.
I always disable AV before starting
There was only 19.8GB of free space the first 3 attempts. I freed up over 10GB for 4th attempt.

    Hello @TV2,
If you're using a 3rd party antivirus, it is suggested to completely uninstall it vs just disable it.

I think you lack of disk space is going to be a big factor in failure here. Look and Settings -> Apps and feature (sort by size) and see if you can uninstall more apps you don't need to make more space.

If you're selecting to save personal apps and files and the install is trying to create Windows.old to save old Windows and all you apps and files, it's probably choking on lack of disk space during the upgrade.

    Hi Steve
I did free up space. MS recommends at least 20GB, I now have over 35GB. Plenty.

I am running Avast. Yes it may be interfering with this install, but it did not interfere with installs on 4 other PCs, one much older than this one. I will give that a shot after eliminating some other possibilities.

A good tool to help determine why an upgrade failed is Microsoft's SetupDiag -

The posted V2 had not collected log files.
When running V2 > click extract all (see instructions).

The log does show that Avast is still installed.

With their history, I personally would not recommend Avast to anyone anymore.

Going forward, you might consider using another AV product.

    Got it.
    Thanks

I will give it a go without AV.

Well that was an hour and a half of my life I will never get back.

Uninstalled Avast. Manually cleaned up files and registry.
Installed update using Media Creation Tool USB ISO.
Fails at the same point, same error, no change.

This happend to me on only one of my four PCs, a laptop.
It seems to be happening to others out there in Windows land: KB4579311 is failing to install for Many, causing Black Screen, Login & Print issue, and more
