Upgrade from windows 8 to windows 10 on laptop

I think I will be getting a laptop that has windows 8.. I would like to upgrade it to windows 10. (I have a windows 10 desktop)

1st.. is that still possible to do.
2nd.. should I do it with the orginal owner or after changing it to my own credentials..
3rd .. where would I find the key.. or is it needed.
4th ... and most important.. Please add any information that I will, (or might) need to know before doing this..

    Thank You
I Do Not at this time have the laptop or version number at this time.. It probably will be a couple weeks before the current owner gets their new replacement laptop.

    1. Yes
    2. Setup Win8 as you wish but you may need to get the Win8.1 update before Upgrading to Windows 10.
    3. If it originally came with Win8 the necessary information is embedded on the motherboard.
    4. Just proceed as if doing an update. If it gives problems you can always download and run the Media Creation Tool to download the Windows Version 2004, either the .iso file or create the Bootable USB drive, use the 8GB size with nothing on it as it will be reformatted.

Yes, it is still free to upgrade an activated Win7 or Win8 machine to Windows 10. It will be activated with a digital license for Windows 10.

2nd.. should I do it with the orginal owner or after changing it to my own credentials..
I would do it after you have changed it to your own.

None will be needed. The fact that the existing Windows 7 or 8 is activated will be enough to activate the upgrade to Windows 10.

Most everything you'll need to know is in this tutorial.

    Upgrade to Windows 10

In addition, if the laptop you are getting was built for Windows 8 or.8.1 and had Windows pre-installed by the manufacturer then it will have a Windows key embedded in its bios firmware. If so, then you can if you wish clean install Windows 10. Setup will read the key from the bios and use it to choose the correct edition to install (Home or Pro) and to activate Windows 10.

I'd try the upgrade first, that way you'll keep all installed software. But if you are not happy with how it behaves then you could wipe it and do a clean install later on.

When you have the laptop, fill in your specs here: https://www.tenforums.com/profile.php?do=extra so we can see if there's anything model-specific you need to know.

Just to be clear, you can't go straight to Windows 10 from Windows 8.

You need to upgrade to Windows 8.1.

Since the Windows 8 Store closed in July 2019, you'll need to get the ISO to do the upgrade.

You need to upgrade to Windows 8.1.

I believe that was only true if you wanted use the Get Windows 10 (GWX) app when W10 was first offered as a free upgrade. That upgrade route ended on July 29, 2016 and the GWX app was withdrawn.

@Brink's tutorial make no mention of needing to upgrade from 8 to 8.1, in fact it clearly says at Step 5 that you can mount the ISO in Windows 8 and perform the upgrade...

    B) In Windows 8, 8.1, or 10, mount the ISO file, and go to step 7 below.

An ISO is a disk image file that could be burned to a DVD. If you run the media creation tool to make your W10 install media then you have the option to make a USB or an ISO file. For upgrade purposes it is probably easier to make the ISO. You don't need to burn it to a disk, you can mount the ISO file as a virtual disk and run Setup from there.
