Asus Laptop Win 10 v 2004 Upgrade Failure (UNDOING CHANGES)

Hi, this seems to be a good laptop from around 2013.



First on 2004: this build seems subject to a slowly increasing number of issues that may affect some people. Some are holding back from upgrading. See Known and Resolved Issues in the relevant articles in the News section and search generally for e.g.

Second: diagnosing and resolving upgrade problems is far from straightforward- there can be many causes. Threads here often go on for days without resolution despite log analysis. A few are luckier.

Please post a screenshot of your partitions using a 3rd party partition manager, not Disk Management thus:
Were you offered the upgrade?
How much free space do you have on C: ?
What security software do you use?

If you still wish to attempt the upgrade

Basic preparation for upgrade:
a. create a disk image of all system partitions - just in case
b. disable/uninstall any 3rd party security software
c. disconnect unnecessary peripherals
d. Ensure your BIOS is the latest

Please inspect/zip and upload the relevant upgrade logs:

Attempt the upgrade thus:
- download a 2004 iso file
- perform a clean boot
- ensure you have at least 30Gb free on C:
- mount the iso file
- reattempt the upgrade by running setup.exe from the mounted iso file

The partitions look ok.

I suggest you explore the log files.

Wow, I'm a bit shocked that an ISO install didnt work. Got the same results... "attempting to recover installation..." "undoing changes made to your computer..."
I don't know how to read log files but I'm attaching it here - the one generated upon failure at this point.
Would be amazing if anyone here who knows how to read these could help me out!

Did you attempt that upgrade after a clean boot?

That error number is typical of a failure to migrate a driver.
Please feel free to research the error number both on this forum and generally. It's quite common.

All the iso download will help with is issues related to Windows Update and possibly space. It is not in the least suprising that it failed. Point is you now have the iso file and can readily reattempt the upgrade when appropriate.

Error logs are not diagnostic. One approach is to look for failures within them, and use Google to find similar cases.
Feel free to do that for yourself.

Note the recommendations here:

Second boot phase: In this phase, the system is running under the target OS with new drivers. Boot failures are most commonly due to anti-virus software or filter drivers. Disconnect all peripheral devices except for the mouse, keyboard, and display. Obtain and install updated device drivers, temporarily uninstall anti-virus software, then retry the upgrade.

Your setupact.log doesn't contain anything of interest. Did you pick the right one? And is there a setuperr.log?

Stay with 1909, 2004 is flawed.
