How to transfer files from old PC to new PC

Okay, so I am stuck with this laptop for 7 years and my parents doesn't get me a new one. I'm planning to get the Acer Aspire 3 (AMD) but I am stuck with a question:

"How Do I migrate my files/My entire installation?"

Hi, questions on migrating from one PC to another have been answered a number of times as this recurs, so feel free to search the forum using e.g. some of the terms I will use.

    Options:

    a. Migration software- from 64 bit-> 64 bit or 32->32 : Easeus Todo PCTrans; Laplink PC Mover: single use license- recommend using a disk image of the source PC as source for the migration.
    - selectively move accounts, data, most programs.

New PC starts as a clean install.

    b. Transfer the entire disk/copy of disk to new PC and hope Windows adapts all drivers- which it often does.
Assumes both are UEFI or MBR.

    c. image your disk and restore the image, adjusting partition sizes as appropriate.

Imaging software often recommend: Macrium Reflect (free-paid).

License: if your present license is OEM, you can't re-use it. If retail, you can transfer it to the new PC, saving the cost.

You do not want a 7 year old drive on a new PC. Just get your files off the old drive by hooking it up to the new PC, then just copy and paste the data you want moved to the new PC.

.. the installation may not be that old- could have clean installed at any point.

Program migration is selective, thus user can select e.g. only recently installed programs.

I would consider that approach only relevant if many programs were to be transferred. If only a few, could take less time to install manually and not worth the cost of the license.

Case must be considered on its merits.

One additional method to transfer files is to create and use windows.old.
    It's a copy and paste.

My laptop came with Windows 8.1 Preinstalled. And the last time I got it from service is this year.

I wouldn't transfer any software from the old computer to the new one.
I would install all software on the new one.
For your data I suppose you do have a USB backup drive. Save all your data to it and then transfer to the new one.
