Dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 10, can't boot into Ubuntu

I've dual booted my computer with Ubuntu, I was able to boot into it for a while until windows updated itself and now it skips over the Linux boot menu. Secure and fast boot are both disabled.

I've tried adding Ubuntu onto the Windows boot menu but I can't get that to work either.

I've also tried uninstalling the updates, it still does it and there are two updates that won't uninstall (KB4559309 and KB4569073).

The only way to access Ubuntu is to go into the advanced boot setting every time I want to use it

How can I get my computer to stop skipping over the option to use Ubuntu or add it to the Windows boot menu?

I want to know if is this an Ubuntu problem, Windows problem, or something with the BIOS/firmware?

Would uninstall Windows fix the problem?

This worked to get the Grub menu back:

(Running bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi on the command prompt)

SIDEBAR -- I find Windows goes out of it's way to make this process difficult -- while all the time suggesting how much it loves Linux. I gave up. Even VirtualBox has gone from interesting to agonizing.

Best practice: install grub2 into partition bootsector, instead of harddisk masterbootsector. Then you can manually add ubuntu entry into windows bcd menu using easybcd.

Doesn't this apply only to legacy boot?

My laptop (HP ProBook 4330s) has a similar problem: the path of the boot efi-file is hardcoded in the firmware. One can move or rename the windows boot file, put the grub boot file in its place and create a grub boot stanza for chainloading the windows boot file.

This works ok, but this arrangement is upset after every cumulative update. So in the end I just used F9/advanced boot to get into ubuntu.

Have you thought of using the Windows boot for both Windows and Linux. EasyBCD is supposed to be able to handle many O/S including Windows and Linux. If a Windows update changes things you could always use EasyBCD to easily add Linux to the boot menu again.

I remember looking at it years ago, when I viewed it as a real problem. But at the time it did not yet support uefi boot. I see that now it does, but the current situation is not bad enough to justify a closed-source remedy.

Install windows
then
install linux

then we have boot menu from grub
after that reboot to windows
install EasyBCD
setup EasyBCD

then we have boot loader from EasyBCD.
until windows update and eliminated the boot loader.
after that just run EasyBCD from windows again
re-add ...
then..... booom
multi boot ready again ?
