[SOLVED] Windows 10 1909 fails to update to 2004

I am fascinated by Win10's multiple attempts to upgrade my Desktop from v1909 to v2004. How can I find ut what is the problem? Just very curious after their five failed attempts.

How can I find out what the problem is?
Upgrade errors are very hard to resolve.

Error code? Error message? Research these.

Inspect your Windows upgrade error logs.

Basic preparation - uninstall any security software, make sure you have at least 30Gb free on C:
Try a clean boot, then attempt upgrade using a downloaded iso file.

    For reference:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/upgrade-error-codes
Windows Upgrade Logs: (which you can inspect to try to determine what happened)
Note this is far from obvious or easy.
Windows 10 Deployment Upgrade Process Logs.

See the relevant part of the tutorial on upgrading to Windows 10, which gives links to relevant pages for upgrade problems.

Note that 2004 presents some users with certain problems. See Known and Resolved Issues... article in the News section.

@dalchina, thanks for the info. I will check the logs which should show the error numbers. After the update began, I left the computer and waited until the update reboot. Instead, the box was off. On turning it on, it immediately began the roll back. Virus protection is by Windows, and there is plenty of empty space.

How are you trying to do it, by windows update or the Iso file ???

You don`t want 2004 now anyway, not until the SSD optimization issue is fixed.

Here are the replies, hopefully in order.
@zbook, Windowsupgradetroubleshooting.ps1 does not work. see the following error. I tried it in Powershell as admin
    Code:
    Windows PowerShell
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
Try the new cross-platform PowerShell https://aka.ms/pscore6
    PS C:\Users\ineuw> Windowsupgradetroubleshooting.ps1
Windowsupgradetroubleshooting.ps1 : The term 'Windowsupgradetroubleshooting.ps1' is not recognized as the name of a
cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the spelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify
that the path is correct and try again.

The latest Win10 2004 live copy was downloaded on 2020-06-19. This failed to install at that time. @AddRAM, I agree with you 100%. The SSD may be the issue. I have two installed. One boots Widows 10 and the 2nd boots Linux Mint. It's worth waiting because 1909 works well.

The only issue with 1909 now is the Photo Viewer app.

But you can install this one. I changed the background color to black.

Restore Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10

But then there are a lot of photo viewers out there.

Thanks. Didn't even know about Windows Photo Viewer. It's possible because I uninstalled all unused Windows software My go to photo software has always been Irfanview.

The Windows photo app may open 4, 5, maybe 6 pictures in a row, then it gets stuck for a bit. Thought it would have been fixed, I even thought we could steal the files for it from 2004, but it`s not worth the effort.

If they ever fix the optimization issue we can update to 2004 and all will be good.

I can`t even uninstall it as uninstall is grayed out, and repair don`t work either, and if you were to try to reset it, it says the apps data will be deleted. Not exactly sure what they mean by that.
