    Replacing UBUNTU with W10

    Hello All,
Am about to replace Ubuntu with W10 on my laptop - have legit key.
I have downloaded current W10 using MCT and created bootable flash drive using another PC.
What do I need to do to my laptop before I start the W10 install ie wipe/reformat etc ?
Or will the flash drive do it for me ?
    Thanks,
    MWombat

I'd think the USB stick will do what you need-----delete all partitions to unallocated space, to which Windows is then installed, making new partitions as it sees fit.

Having said that--I've read occasionally of problems arising when the hard drive previously had Linux installed. I'd guess you could eliminate that risk by using Diskpart's "clean" or "clean all" commands to wipe the drive before you begin using the Windows installer. "Clean" would take seconds to run; "clean all" much longer.

But, in your shoes I'd probably just dive in without Diskpart and see what happens.

I think you'd normally want to look at the BIOS first and make sure "secure boot" is off.

Are you going with UEFI and a GPT disk?

Disconnect all external stuff. All you need is monitor, mouse and keyboard.

If you still have the Linux LiveDVD or the LiveUSB created by its Image Writer or if you can get GPARTED downloaded on a computer and burn a Bootable LiveCD from that .iso file you can use it to delete all partitions on the intended drive to give a as-shipped condition. The LiveDVDs I've used had GPARTED as a program.

Boot the computer from the Windows 10 USB flash drive. When the first screen comes up, press Shift + F10 (if a laptop, you might need to do Shift + Fn + F10). That will open a command prompt. Then run:

    diskpart
    list disk
select disk # <-replace # with the actual number of the drive you want to install to
clean <- this will erase the drive select above, make sure it's correct!
convert mbr <- I know UEFI Windows install uses GPT. Just do this, though.
    exit
    exit

Then you should be good to go with a clean drive to install Windows to.
