If you still have no alternative, and your backup is the only one available, you can do this (but don't leave it disabled permanently):
How to Enable or Disable Driver Signature Enforcement in Windows 10
Unfortunately it seems that the Enforcement was not there when I first installed Win 10 but has been added since. As the driver is disabled next time the PC is restarted, I shan't bother. So now I have an old PC that I will soon disconnect and a great new one that can't run the device

The device is a Sniffer with Microchip electronics that is mainly intended for development. I will have a try at seeing if they have an update, but it is unlikely, in which case I will have to fire up my Win 7 PC a few times a year to check some solar cells' inverter is working correctly.

There is no guarantee that old hardware will continue to work with later Windows if unsupported, which I'm sure you know. E.g. I have a scanner- works perfectly- but no driver that worked from Win 8 on.

However if I use e.g. Win XP as a virtual machine under Win 10, I can install the driver on that. You might consider that approach.

Otherwise, as I suggested, try a driver updater tool- you might be lucky- or not.

I see now that I misunderstood dalchina's suggestion and by using the Shift + Restart with the necessary steps to follow I could then add the unsigned driver which remains in place after a final restart! So that problem has been solved

I now have a complete new Desktop configured with all the old programmes etc installed by various methods from all the backups I made and install files I saved. Great, they all work! And it is a MUCH better machine than the "old" one.

I now have to try to change it from Home to Pro, after re-reading the earlier suggestions. By the way, just for fun I used the method on the Microsoft Store page to see what might happen. Zilch - it doesn't work.

Glad you've made progress. I guess you've seen this:

Now I have a big PROBLEM! - This has to be typed on the old PC as the new one has crashed.
I tried the method of using the generic key and all seemed to go well. Except that after a restart. the new PC was behaving very strangely. I decided to not do any more but just use the Windows System Restore. I got a shock when I went to open it as the last one stated it was for before Win 10 Enterprise was installed as an upgrade! I started System Restore so as to at least get back to Home but that failed to work.

That was a shock as I wasn't expecting that. I immediately went to Recovery and selected Reset. Again, all seemed to be OK until I went to restart and then I just got Diagnosing your Computer over and over again on every restart.
So then I had a PC that refused to actually boot into any sort of Windows 10

Finally I rebooted using the AOMEI Backupper USB stick which I made from Backupper with WinPE on it. The PC booted to that OK and I went to the options to Restore the System Backup. After that finished and said OK to restart I then got an MS message stating Secure Boot Violation and nothing I can do now allows the PC to boot to anything I have tried-

Any ideas as to how to get in to any sort of Windows so I can start from scratch if necessary. Maybe even start the builtin install programme on the SDD to at least get the basic Home install back?

Go into UEFI (BIOS) settings and turn off or disable secure boot.

OK then I should be able to enter safe mode and delete the suspect file/device.

Then I had better BUY a Pro license!!!

Latest - disabling secure boot didn't help. I tried all the possibilities offered from the part of the boot menu that worked and none helped to get into Windows, so I decided to cut my losses and use Clean Install. I used my wife's PC (8.1) to use Create Media to get a Win 10 install on a USB. Booting from that gave me a clean working system with some of the configuration set the way I wanted it. Now I am working my way through backups to get programmes and files reinstated. A safer way of getting past the damage that trying to upgrade to Pro had caused.

I am still happy with my new PC but not so much with some of the esoteric methods of operating within Win 10.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the advice. It didn't always work but I learnt a lot.

PS My user name appears as tony in the new PC's OS. Up to now it has always appeared as Tony. Does it matter?

At last I summoned up the courage to upgrade to Pro - how I wish I had never tried!!! It is a total disaster. The process never completed and I now have a computer that appears to be an unactivated Win 10 Enterprise. As such it refuses to upgrade to Pro or back to home. I have spent hours on the phone to different help desk people, none of whom have come up with a solution.

I did that yesterday and one person said they would arrange to fix the problem and email me what to do. Toady when I switched on it all started up OK but with the message that my OS is now Enterprise and not activated. It instructed me to go to the Troubleshoot Activation page where eventually it told me I can't install Pro on an Enterprise OS.

So far I have sent off three messages to various technicians and at this time, none have answered.
I have tried going back to help pages but they lead me in the wrong direction now! I can't even get an online Help contact on the Store pages. I thought maybe i could get the upgrade to pro download(?) so I could try and run it. Or maybe stop payment and try again to buy it.

Why is everything so involved? Simply activating with the right key supplied on a paper document never gave so much trouble, and where problems arose, a simple online step by step form sorted it out.

PS Forgot to mention - initially the store wouldn't let me confirm my credit card as it insisted I needed to give a UK postcode even though the card details on my account showed it as issued on a Danish bank! Even though my MS account also lists my Danish address. How stupid can it get?

Disconnect the computer from all sources of the internet. Once the computer is disconnected from the internet change the product key to:
    VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

Once that completely finishes, you can reconnect to the internet.
