may windows 10 release appeared today: garbage

Hello.

My last attempt to install the May upgrade failed. Or, rather, it installed after hours and then died when finished because my screens had no windows images at all.

So I restored my reflect image and worked happily away waiting for the next release.

Well, that release appeared this morning. And, yes, the install was fast, little over an hour, compared to the earlier failed attempt.

But NOT a success.

a) same boot problem: no image after SHUTDOWN and restart. (I shutdown normally but ever since I've installed Windows 10 I can restart the computer by taping the keyboard.)

b) If I hold the left shift key when I shutdown the computer really shuts and I can restart BUT

c) The restart is AWFULLY SLOW with the dotted circle starting and stopping. Well over five minutes to get the machine running.

d) same issue with RESTART

I can't believe this.

My hardware is stable, pretty standard. Running mostly standard issue Microsoft Stuff. No games. Just business.

Any help would be more than appreciated.

Hi, if you are referring to upgrading to build 2004, I would hold off anyway. This is causing a sufficient number of people problems- mostly with devices, various- for MS to not be actively offering it via Windows Update.

I note you have a SSD- they have messed up the trim algorithm and there seems to be a risk of having your SSD defragged.

I suggest you wait a while and monitor this list.

Thank you for the reply.
I did wait after the initial failure.
After a week or so, Windows update had a notice that the May 2004 update was "coming."
It came this morning.
And crash. Again.

As I suggested, simply don't bother with it for (quite) a while. I think it's clear from my comment that MS is reviewing this.

Wait. Longer. I doubt it offers you much you really need.

There is of course the question as to whether any upgrade attempt will fail for some reason, but those failures are VERY hard to try to resolve.

I have four machines that upgraded to 2004 without issues. But I'd echo dalchina's advice: "don't bother with it for (quite) a while".

For a start, I'm not letting it anywhere near my machines with SSDs until the 'defrag' issue is fixed (as yet, it's not even been acknowledged by MS).

But mainly because there is very little that's new in 2004. A lot of minor tweaks and improvements, but you'd be hard pressed to see any significant difference from 1909. With end of support for 1909 in May 2021 there's absolutely no urgency.

Give it 3 more months, and use the ISO file method to update to 2004, not windows update or update assistant.

It surely won`t take an hour to install 2004 using the ISO file method.

If you don`t know what that means, just ask

But if you`re using 1909 now, without issue, leave it be, it runs great

Hi,
Using the iso took about 15 minutes without internet to install 2004 on z490 system.
Not surprising time it took to download iso was subtracted from the installation process and disconnecting from the internet saves more time not messing with ms servers for updates plus ms account nonsense.
