Why did my W10 upgrade revert back to W7 during installation?

I was just upgrading my Dell Vostro 460 desktop from W7 Pro to W10 Home and towards the end of the process I see that it is removing all updates and it reboots back to W7 Pro. I was not watching the monitor as I knew it would take a while so that was quite a surprise. This is not my first W10 upgrade so, I don't know if I missed something or what happened. Help!

Not that Windows 10 is particularly safe or secure at all, but it is much more so than Win7.

Maybe I misunderstood your message. I actually like the look of W10 and some of it's features now that I have gotten used to using W10 Pro on my new laptop. And you are right about the W7 vulnerability.

I like the look of Windows 10, too.

However: Windows 7 Basic theme is my absolute beautiful favorite. Full stop.

Replying to the OP. It likely hit what Microsoft calls a "show stopper". At some point it figured out that this just isn't going to work, and backtracked to what was working. A long list of checks and balances are done along the way and if things go wrong, it stops and backtracks.

And responding to the other posts, "my favorite" is a very relative thing. The love hate Windows thing has gone on since the first release.
My all time favorite was Windows 2000. It was Windows NT but could play games. I didn't like Windows XP or Windows 7 all that much. I'm not saying they were not Ok, I just wasn't a fan of the UI. I'm not all that enthused by Windows 10 but at some point you have to move on. It so far meets my needs and is usable for what I do on a windows PC.

I followed the instructions given in the "How to Upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 for Free" W10 help thread like I had done before. The desktop PC does have the Avast Free version AV software installed.

I will try again tomorrow and uninstall the AV first. And this time, I will watch the whole parade while it is happening to see if there are any notices or warnings that pop up.

This Dell Vostro 460 should be able to handle W10 as it has the Intel Quad Core i7-2600 3.4GHz CPU in it and I just upgraded the RAM to 12Gb just today. The 500Gb HD is only about a third used up as well. So it more than meets the requirements for the upgrade.

8) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:

10) When this has completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

13) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
chkdsk /r /v
This may take hours to run so plan to run overnight.
Run on all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /r /v C: or chkdsk /r /v D: changing the drive letter to the applicable drive.
