    Windows 2004 Update!

    Hi all

I hope you are all safe in these very stage times.

I am using Windows 10 Pro (1909) on a relatively recent PC with 32GB RAM, SSD drives etc. Normally, the PC is lightning fast and no matter what I do there are very few lag issues or slowdowns.I recently updated to the 2004 windows update. This was a complete disaster, immediately after doing this I noticed that everything was sluggish and the whole PC seemed to be misbehaving. It is also possibly worth noting that this update took almost a working day to complete.I almost immediately decided to revert back to my previous version of Windows. This unfortunately, this did not solve the problem, there were still some serious issues with the operating system, things just did not seem right.I then decided to uninstall all the programs which required keys to put that on servers etc and reset the PC. I have now reset the PC and reinstalled windows and installed programs back on (almost). As everyone probably already knows, you can take some time to get fully back up to normal as there are always little tweaks and settings that have not been changed and small programs which need to be installed before you are fully back up and running.Anyway, I appear to be still suffering a few problems including some programs being slower than I would expect and I have even had some BSOD situations, although in fairness I have recently had that on my laptop as well which has not been updated to the 2004 update. I am wondering if this could be something to be with my PC syncing with the NAS still and the cloud, so i might wait for this to complete (this does not seem to be using too many resources - maybe 15% according to task manager) . I am wondering if the reset is not so good and as I have read somewhere else on the system goes back to a known working version of Windows. However, this seems to mean it goes back to the same version as it was immediately prior to the reset which is possibly why I am getting these issues. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I am wondering if a complete reinstall from the original media or a downloaded image would have been a better option for me. It seems that the reset only avoids the need for downloading the Windows and office updates. Therefore, if there are problems with any of the updates which were installed at the point at which windows decides to reset at, there may still be these problems post the reset.Sorry to go on this is consuming so much of my time and I just want to get back up and running the quickest possible way without there being any issues! Any thoughts or comments much appreciated. It would be interesting to know if anybody else has had issues going back to the previous version of Windows following a failed update and even perhaps suffering the same issues when they reset the PC. I am not sure how windows decides what is the last known working copy of windows to reset to.Many thanks in anticipation.

    Matt

My humble advice ; use Macrium in future , to backup/restore .
    I roll back to 1909 in just 2 minutes ( from 2004 to 1909 ) , just by using my backup-media ( Macrium) !
I noticed serious bugs in 2004 , will see if they will be fixed by MS ...........when I dont feel comfortable with 2004 anymore , I just roll back to a perfect fine running 1909 again............

    - just to check, did you 'Go back to the previous build'?
Go Back to the Previous Version of Windows in Windows 10

I am not sure how windows decides what is the last known working copy of windows to reset to.
When you upgrade, Windows.old is created. That is what is used to restore your previous build- other than possible new Windows updates or other updates, you should be back exactly as was.

I have even had some BSOD situations
This should not be the normal situation- although I have seen a few instances where one was triggered by a 3rd party program, but not for quite a while.

However, this seems to mean it goes back to the same version as it was immediately prior to the reset which is possibly why I am getting these issues.
Puzzled- I thought you said elsewhere it was lightning fast running build 1909 previously. Are you saying you were having problems with 1909 before upgrading?

(I may have missed something- using paragraphs helps to make things clearer).

Thank you for the responses.I would answer the questions as follows:Yes, I did go back to the previous build. When I restored my previous build, there were issues with the speed and performance of the PC.I know I should not be getting BSOD. These do happen occasionally though and I did actually get one a few minutes ago... tcpip.sys. I have now reset TCP/IP.No, it was not lightning fast immediately prior to upgrading, but is generally a very fast PC. There have been some performance issues over the past few months, but the PC was working satisfactorily.Interestingly, I found that the optimise drives issue that was present in 2004 update did carry down to this reset version of Windows. I disabled the scheduled optimisation and even though all the SSD drives are not selected for optimisation they were optimised around half an hour ago? Thanks once again for your comments and suggestions.

win version is 1909 (OS Build 18363.900)

    - - - Updated - - -

Actually i say carry down, this issue could of course have been there before the update and i have just seen that my laptop (same OS build) and Surface Pro 6 (again same OS Build) are doing the same thing. I am not sure why windows is optimising SSD drives, its not necessary.

Two things you may think off , first just dont auto trim/defrag ..........second , if it does still ( should not happen !) , set the service "Optimize Drives" from auto to manual/ off .
I find this bug ( or ; "BIG failure " !!) one of the main reasons for rolling back to 1909 ............

i do not think the rim/defrag is a windows 2004 issue. I have other PCs on v1909 and they are, or were until this am, doing the same. i have now disabled the scheduled optimisation of the SSD drives.

" disabled the scheduled optimisation "...........I did so too , still I noticed the service " Optimize Drives " , auto /started !
While I set this service to auto/off .............what is triggering this buggy service to enable itself again ??
This Windows Defrag/trim tool can do much harm to your SSDs , if running too much........!!
