My backup is in need of an OS - I think I'll do a clean install of 2004. See what happens.

Not very relevant to the thread, but I want to share... I recently installed the new version of an application without removing the old version and something went wrong. As a result in Windows Explorer I could not see how much free space each drive has and when I right-clicked and selected Properties, the Properties menu was gone! I then tried to completely uninstall both versions and reinstall only the newer version, could not complete the setup. Fortunately I had recently cloned my SSD in order to replace it with a larger SSD, so I just re-cloned and saved the day.

Do not forget, whatever you do always backup fist (and create a System Restore point). Avoid trying new applications on your main computer, try on another first and if OK, then proceed to install to your computer. ALWAYS remove the olrder versions before installing a new version, unless it can upgrade the older version (lesson learned).
