Avoiding 2004 upgrade

I've upgraded several of my machines to 2004. Unfortunately that's killing my 15 yo canon inkjet. It's still working great as a printer but the scanner doesn't work as soon as I upgrade. Perhaps understandable and I'd buy a new one except that I've got a ton of ink and the printer driver is still good.

So I'd like to keep my HP laptop on 1909 and run out the printer's life. I'm happy to install 1909 updates but would like to not install 2004. Is MS going to eventually force an install (updates are not auto installed now)? Or would my best option be to install WAU Manager as described in Shawn's tutorial the best method

The easy way is to go to Advanced Options in Windows Update. I have the feature (2004) update delayed for 365 days from the date it was release. Updates for 1909 and other stuff (Quality) are not delayed so I will get them every Month.

Personally, I will continue to use 1909 on both of my PC`s, it works great, no need to update it.

I'll probably try to keep it at 1909 until I run out of ink (that will take awhile).

Interesting about the advanced options / defer. I was on my main machine which is at 2004. The option doesn't appear. Don't know if they took it away or if it only shows when there is a pending feature update. But it is on the HP laptop and I've set that to 365 days.

I also do full macrium backups before updating my machines so if they sneak in something I don't like, I'll just restore back.

Hi,
I just use windows update mini tool never have to look at update setting in 10.
Set to manual check for updates and actually see them all before they start to install quite a concept hide or install the ones you want too

You have to give a new Feature update a while to catch up with other hardware. That`s one of the reasons and usually the main reason I tell people to wait at least 5 or 6 months to even consider installing the new update.

Don`t fix what isn`t broken

The Defer Feature update option was also missing from one of the earlier W10 versions, it could have even been 1909 and it was added with a update, I absolutely forget when exactly.

The Feature update could still be deferred, the option just wasn`t in Advanced options anymore.

I was just glad when 1909 showed it again.

There is a group policy setting to defer feature updates too. If you set that then set it back to not configured then the option to defer updates should reappear in the main Settings menu.

The patch Tuesday updates from May (I believe it was May) had a bug that caused printing issues for many users. Maybe this is the cause of your printing issues?

This affected all Windows 10 versions except 1511. The June patch Tuesday updates included fixes for this issue for all the affected versions of Windows EXCEPT 2004. The fix for 2004 was just released on June 18th as an out of band cumulative update KB4567523. You may just want to do a check for updates to obtain that update or check your update history to see if you already have it.

Actually the printer is working (although I probably should make sure my really old laserjet still works). It's the scanner that isn't working after the 2004 update. But I'll take a read on KB4567523 and see if it might apply to the scanner.
