black screen after failed 2004 update

Attempted to install 2004 update from 1909 yesterday. Got stuck at 17% after reboot. I had to leave work and hoped the battery would last until I got home but it didn't. When I start my laptop I get the dell screen with the progress bar then goes to a black screen with a blinking rectangle cursor in the top left. That's all it does no matter how long I leave it do this. Did I fubar the install? It is a dell xps win10 pro 64. Had no issues before this happening. Thanks.

    Hi.

Do you have V2004 boot media?

If so boot from it. After first screen you should be able to select "Repair this PC"

It should bring you to Advance Start Up Options, select Troubleshoot, should be an option on that page to Uninstall Updates.

Sounds like you are not Imaging your device. I strongly recommend you start. I recommend Macrium reflect but there are lots of tools out there. The Macrium software is free and is a reliable method to restore your Windows installation to a working state, be it bad update, bad storage drive or finger error.

With any Imaging tool, create and test the rescue (boot) media. Part of the test is the booting to the program and the second part is to ensure you can navigate to your Images (backups).

I backup regularly and keep several versions allowing me to go back in time. If your data is part of your Windows partition you do have to account for the fact that a restoration will overwrite data. I keep my data in a separate partition because of this.

Thanks for the reply. No, I do not have v2004 boot media and do not know how to get one. I do have a copy of the media creation tool 1909 that I used to update from win7 to win10. Would this work? I may have a backup of this computer somehwere on an external hdd that I created with Acronis true image.

The tutorial section here - see the Tutorials button above- has lots of useful information: here's a searchable list:

Naturally you'll recognise relying on battery power to complete upgrades in particular is not a good idea. Some people find this takes many hours, and may not always succeed of course.

You could try the 1909 media.

If you have your Acronis Image that is very good news.

Before restoring this though I would create a boot disk and copy out your personal data. If you don't you will lose it when Acronis restores the Image.

This is one boot disk you can make for the copy process.
