I'm having similar issues with my wifes machine. I tried the windows update, which went to 71% and the whole computer froze up. Tried 3 different times and same thing. Downloaded the WMC tool and tried to install update from there and computer freezes up at 47%. When I say computer freezes, I mean the mouse and everything freezes and the only way to recover is to restart by the reset button.

We see this so often here!
You really do need to be patient and let it run, preferably overnight for example.
It will appear to be frozen, but in fact, it is probably not!

Why doesn't the system warn you that the process might take hours/days??? I just got up, turned my computer on. Update to install and now I'm stuck on 92% and can't do anything until the process completes, which could be a day (if even that)! This is the second update that's gone pear shaped on my new computer. I'm thinking about just taking this thing off the internet and using it as it is. In my experience successive updates tend to lead to slower computers over time anyway.

OK stuck on Restart now for the past 20 minutes. How long before I just cold restart this thing?

My patience ran out and I decided to cold restart it, turned it back on and it whizzed through some configuration and started up again fine.

This really is pathetic. I've had a cheap Lenovo tower for 4 years and never had one single issue updating. £900 gaming tower and two updates - both problems.

I suppose that this is quite a difficult thing to determine as it depends to a certain extent on the type of Internet you have, the speed of downloads and uploads by the provider, how clogged up the MS servers are at the time you are downloading, and possibly the specifications of the computer to a small extent that is being used with regard to applying and configuring the WU's once they have completed downloading.

Since you have stuck with this for quite a while now, I would certainly give it more time to hopefully complete.

I don't use WU's [ I have them disabled ] because of the problems that they can cause.

One thing that is always highly recommended is to create a regular System Image. This way, if after a WU the computer is not working as it should, you can restore the previous system state back from the image.

If you would like information on Imaging & Backup then please let us know and we will provide it for you.

    I hope this helps.

Well I uplugged my Logitech game controller and then it seemed to get past the 92%. Then after maybe 20-30m on restart I tried unplugging the keyboard and mouse and then when I plugged them back in they wouldn't respond so that's the point when I just decided to cold restart it and it came back on (whizzed through more configurations) and now it's working fine again.

I have been meaning to get round to creating a system image. I already have one from the start (which was about 10GB - seems a bit low) but backing up my 256GB SSD regularly seems like a good idea. Can I create space on my 2GB HDD there maybe or does it have to be an external?

You can of course partition your HDD and Image or Backup to it. BUT, if your HDD FAILS, then your Images or Backups will become corrupted and useless. Therefore it is ALWAYS recommended to Image or Backup to an external HDD.

Thanks again Paul, I'll look into that.

Not sure what difference it makes backing up on an internal or external HDD though since both can potentially fail?

    You are VERY welcome.

Very TRUE. That is why a lot of people have an identical Images or Backups in two locations. It is better to be safe than sorry!

    I hope this helps.

First, patience- some upgrades can take hours.
Second, I had success when this happened by restarting, letting the PC undo everything, manually upgrading using an iso file without accepting updates. Completed normally.

I'll know next time to leave it updating overnight..

I've no doubt Macrium is a great piece of software and I trust the endorsement of it from this site.

However I am (at this time) reluctant towards adding any third party software to my new computer (I'm not even going to install Firefox or Chrome and I'm keeping internet browsing to a minimum)

I just created a WindowsImageBackup of my SSD onto my internal HDD and then copied that folder onto a 128GB USB (which required admin permission). Would that be enough to cover me for restoring my computer to the last saved backup point, if my internal HDD fails and I can't restore it directly from the USB can I still copy this folder back onto an external HDD and perform the restore from there?
