windows 2004 install freeze at 92%

You really do need to be patient and let it run, preferably overnight for example.
It will appear to be frozen, but in fact, it is probably not!

Why doesn't the system warn you that the process might take hours/days??? I just got up, turned my computer on. Update to install and now I'm stuck on 92% and can't do anything until the process completes, which could be a day (if even that)! This is the second update that's gone pear shaped on my new computer. I'm thinking about just taking this thing off the internet and using it as it is. In my experience successive updates tend to lead to slower computers over time anyway.

OK stuck on Restart now for the past 20 minutes. How long before I just cold restart this thing?

My patience ran out and I decided to cold restart it, turned it back on and it whizzed through some configuration and started up again fine.

This really is pathetic. I've had a cheap Lenovo tower for 4 years and never had one single issue updating. £900 gaming tower and two updates - both problems.

I suppose that this is quite a difficult thing to determine as it depends to a certain extent on the type of Internet you have, the speed of downloads and uploads by the provider, how clogged up the MS servers are at the time you are downloading, and possibly the specifications of the computer to a small extent that is being used with regard to applying and configuring the WU's once they have completed downloading.

Since you have stuck with this for quite a while now, I would certainly give it more time to hopefully complete.

I don't use WU's [ I have them disabled ] because of the problems that they can cause.

One thing that is always highly recommended is to create a regular System Image. This way, if after a WU the computer is not working as it should, you can restore the previous system state back from the image.

You can of course partition your HDD and Image or Backup to it. BUT, if your HDD FAILS, then your Images or Backups will become corrupted and useless. Therefore it is ALWAYS recommended to Image or Backup to an external HDD.

You are VERY welcome.

Very TRUE. That is why a lot of people have an identical Images or Backups in two locations. It is better to be safe than sorry!

First, patience- some upgrades can take hours.
Second, I had success when this happened by restarting, letting the PC undo everything, manually upgrading using an iso file without accepting updates. Completed normally.
